I took my 2010 5.7 off road last weekend and was very impressed the first two day but the last trail I was going on on the last days went through a pretty shallow puddle, couldn't have been more than 6 inches deep, and I sucked up water and threw two rods. Insurance and my warranty won't cover it of course. So I've had a fantastic week so far.

Awe man! That sounds terrible? Got any warranty left?
As mentioned above, it got the factory air box on it?

Well I would have my warranty but because it was "negligence" and y fault that water got in they won't cover. When I brought it to the dealer the truck was covered in mud so they basically made up their mind on the warranty as soon as they saw it. But they haven't started working so what I'm thinking about trying to do is getting it towed to another dealer and getting it washed in between there and not telling them about the offroading and see if they will give me my warranty. What do you guys think. Will it work or do they already have in their system that they denied my warranty?
I have the stock air box in it. I was going to ask that, is there a better air box or CAI that will be ether for keeping water out. I thought about a snorkel but they look terrible on the new rams.

Sorry to hear. First thing I woulda done was wash the whole thing. Then take out the same cylinders that the rod let go and pour anti freeze in there. Idk just think out loud. Good luck

Sorry to hear about it--that is one sucky situation. No pun intended.

To get water through the right fender intake and into the stock air box, through the filter and ascending intake tube in sufficient quantity to fill two cyclinders to a level where the exahust stroke couldn't clear it before the valves closed (point of non-compressability leading to two thrown rods) is A LOT of water.

Now, full displacement is about 0.7L per cylinder, and I don't know whether the Hemi is a zero clearance engine. You wouldn't need to entirely fill the cylinders, but unless its zero clearnace that still sounds like a substantial amount of water would have to be between the pistion and head on a compression stroke. Something like 300 - 400 ml or about a beer bottle worth?

Anyone have any more insight into how much water it would take?

What is the compression ratio on the 5.7? If is was say 9:1, then I would think you would only need 1/9th of the 0.7L before you would have trouble (per cylinder). If you look at it closer (assuming a 9:1 ratio), under normal circumstances that 0.7L of air gets compressed to an area the size of (1/9) * 0.7 ~= 0.078L. So there is only a volume of 0.078L between the piston and head at full compression. That means if there is more then 0.078L of non-compressible water, then you will run into trouble.

*Used very loose math and estimates*

This sound right?

I want to add something else as well. Please dont take this the wrong way.

I wouldnt wash the truck and try taking it to another dealership. It is obvious that the truck sucked up water while you were playing offroad, so that is not Dodge or the dealerships fault. Trying to basically cheat them to have this work covered is the exact reason why they are so picky now about what they will and will not cover. I am all for taking advantage of a factory warranty when a part fails, but not if it failed because of a mistake on your part. I know its alot of fun to go playig in the mud and water, but the truck wasnt built for that, and it is the sole reason why the motor locked up on you.

Again, I dont mean for this to come across as harsh, but it is the truth. I would be honest about it and hope for the best.

Just a thought too.. if they've entered their information in about the Wty being void, another dealer will run the VIN and send you on your way. Time to build it up.. see this as an opportunity. :)

I have a friend that works at an engine rebuilding shop and he said hydolock is the number one reason for Hemis coming into the shop. Seams even a small amount of water sucked in is bad news.

Well a dealership cannot just deny your warranty upon looking at it. They would have to prove that the water was the cause of the issue (even if it means tearing into the motor). As far as them entering it in Chrysler's website saying that the warranty is voided, no. They would have to contact Chrysler's hq and explain to them the situation. But working at a dealership seeing issues like this, we dont like people trying to "cheat the system." Which is why they have became so picky about tue warranty items and even make us take pictures of any powertrain items.

I would have washed it but I didn't get a chance since I had to tow it to a dealer because I'm not from around here. As far as taking everythkng off I didn't really have the tools or really the know how. I could do it with enough time, but not where I'm at. What exactly would the antifreeze have done for it??

As far as the other cold air intake doesn't that still go into the wheel well? So would I find myself with the same situation? Would you guys recommend getting something like that as far as a CAI? Is it a good upgrade to do I've seen a lot of guys on the site with CAI's, do they really help that much?

Thank you everyone else for the good wishes ill keep you updated. Had a great tow driver that helped wash my truck on his flat bed and drove me all around to another dealer and even back to base so the trucks at another dealer now ill keep everyone updated if they let me use my warranty or not.
