You'll probably want to work those tabs back into place if you can
I can squeeze them in with needle nose and then they go back on. From here on in with the other 3 rocker shafts am I better not to take those retainers off the rocker shaft?

I'd leave them alone, lol. If you were pulling them for cleaning, buy a couple cans of Brake Clean and spray the shafts down really good with Brake Clean

No, not for cleaning. I found it easier to keep everything in place either the bolts out, line everything up then start lightly turning them down but once I seen those little tabs I thought oh oh. The bolts come up quite far without removing those retainers, I will leave from now on. Thank you

Presently I have the left bank exhaust rocker shaft on and torqued. Correct me if I’m thinking wrong please but I’m thinking it would be a good idea to take 1 plug out of each cylinder now and roll the engine over by hand. If I roll it over by hand after installing each rocket shaft, I will know which one is binding. If I just put all 4 on and something doesn’t turn smooth I will not know which one it is. Good idea?

You can use a piece of welding wire or an old straightened out coat hanger laid lengthwise to help hold the pushrods in place when you reinstall the shafts .It's not a bad idea rolling the engine over by hand to check things out.

Anyone know what this wire is and where it clips to? I don’t seem to have a note on this and it doesn’t appear obvious to me where these 2 clips clip onto? It’s on the right bank near the bottom of the valve cover

Need a better pic Burt. It might plug into a cap on the back of the head, and if it does,it's important it gets plugged in

I will go through my pictures and notes again, have a feel or look with mirror in the back of the head.

I took 2 pictures of mine. One clip clips on between, in the middle of, the last (closest to the firewall) and 2nd to last valve cover bolt. Hopefully you can see it in the pictures. The flash on phone doesn't work for crap and I forgot to bring a flashlight out to the shed with me. The rusty bolt in the 1st picture is the 2nd valve cover bolt in from the firewall. The last valve cover bolt is blocked by the hose in the pic.

My best guess is the other clip goes on the back of the head or valve cover. Again I forgot my inspection mirror when I went out and even so I doubt I'd have been able to see anything back there. It's pretty tight back there. I didn't feel around back there since cold weather/a lot of cold plastic, standing on a cooler just to be able to see back there, and with my luck I would break something lol. It's got to clip back there though since following that wire along from the clip you can kind of hopefully see in the picture it doesn't have a clip again until the front on the head. Or at least that's my best guess where the 2nd clip goes.

Thank you @White six four . I appreciate you going to the haste of going out and getting these pictures. Not everyone would do that. That’s perfect, I can see where it goes from your picture. As for the back clip, I will figure it out. Like you say it has to go to the back of the valve cover or the back of the head. I will look through all my pictures, maybe I will have one of the valve cover or the head that will show where it goes, if not, I will get little inspection mirror in there. Thank you

IMG_3257.pngI might just have one small piece of advice that might help a noob if they were to do this job, The new valve cover gaskets fell off near the front of the cover. I was able to lift it up enough at the front to push it back into its groove but I wasn’t comfortable until I could verify that the gasket indeed was in its place, I was able to verify it was in fact in place near the firewall with a little inspection mirror and visually on the rest of the cover. Also for me, putting the rocker shafts in place, what worked best for me was to lay the rocker shafts on the towers without much concern if they were on the valve or if the rocker arm cup was in the push rod correctly. After laying it on the towers I would just lift up on the shaft, put the arm in the correct t position, then move down to the next one, lift up on the end furthest from the one I have in place just enough so that I can get the second one in place, keep lifting to get the 3rd, then the 4th. It seems to work because as you move to the next arm it doesn’t have to be lifted as high. Anyways, hard for me to explain but it worked great for me, took me about 35 minutes per rocker shaft, but I would check that all 4 rods were in the cups about 8 times or more. Turned the bolts in by hand as much as I could, probably did about 9 torque sequences lol, but I feel if not super careful this would be a step we’re things could go wrong, Bent shaft or bent push rod.

Did someone tell me to lightly oil the sealing gaskets in the intake manifold with engine oil before installing?

IMG_3276.jpegDoes anyone know what this fitting on the back of the intake manifold goes to? It point to the left side of the truck. When I went to put the intake manifold on today it had a vacuum cap on it, but I can’t remember if I had put that cap on before pressure washing or if it’s been there the whole time. I took the cap off before this picture. I will try and look this up maybe on a parts diagram,

Power brake hose maybe. Yes oil or WD40 the intake gaskets when you install the manifold.A finger smear of oil or a good spray of WD40 on both the manifold and the head surface will allow you to shift the manifold around a bit to start the bolts,with-out dislodging the o-ring gaskets

You would of had to remove the brake booster hose to actually pull the manifold off,lol

I came across this video, says the brake booster on this vehicle is ran by the power steering pump and not vacuum from the engine. I will double and triple check next time in over but I really don’t remember taking a hose off from there,

I keep forgetting your truck is a 3/4 ton, lol. If you don't have any extra hoses laying around it might just be capped off.Look the rubber cap over close,if it's been on the engine for almost 10 years, you should be able to tell, just by squeezing it and looking for cracks,a new rubber cap will be soft and pliable and when you squeeze it,there won't be any weather check cracking
