Hey guys,

I have a 2017 1500 with the 5.7. Recently I will try to start it and get a loud click. It happened a few months ago so I got a new battery and all was good. Now it's happening a few days a day.

Got to start truck, get a loud click. The push button is in run mode so I press it to get it to off and try to start again, and it cranks with no problem. Everytime the second time it works when it happens. It doesnt happen with every start but it did happen today
after a long drive so I don't think it's battery or alternator related.

I never had a starter that went out act like this. It cranks very well unless I get the click. Could there be anything else going on besides throwing a new starter on?

Thanks,
Paul

Likely a bad relay they can be intermittent
Thanks, that's a cheap and easy thing to try replacing. It's just odd that seconds later it fires right up.

Knock on wood, I think that was it. Fired up this morning, went to lowes and it took three tries and fired right up. Grabbed a relay and it's started 15 plus times without issue. Appreciate the advice. Never knew they could cause intermittent issues like that.

DID U replace the starter relay in the TIPM in the engine bay?

OK< outstanding catch there and getting your ride squared away,. Always good to read something and remember for future and that a Forum Member had a Good Outcome on a troublesome issue.

ADDED: bmo2tj had it right on. Unfortunately, RAMS are sometimes known for TIPM issues.

mine did this forever. the actual issue is the ground wire coming off the battery. I had to cut back an inch or so and put a new collar on. The issue was always worse in the summer.

I'll keep that in mind if it happens again but the relay seemed to fix it. Wires coming off the battery look fine and they're tight. Didn't check the start wires as the relay worked.

What is the TIPM? Just bought a 2012 Ram and it had a starting issue today. It cranks, continues to crank and then I shut it off. Does it twice and then the third time it starts. New to Rams.

TIPM, which stands for “Totally Integrated Power Module” is the Chrysler nomenclature for the fuse and relay box, or electronic power relay center, in Chrysler vehicles produced since the early-to-mid-2000's. ... Fuses – are actually designed with one purpose in life: To fail

For you it sounds like maybe a fuel pump next cold start prime the pump turn key on 3 times not starting it then try to start if it fires right up ur pump is shot.

It usually starts after doing exactly like your answer. It started this afternoon and I drove to a local shop for repair. After I parked it, turned the key and it turned over but no start. Truck is 9 years old and the previous owner replaced some worn out parts. They don't make vehicles like they used to back in the day.
