I have a 2016 Ram 3.0L ecodiesel

I have been wondering if the OIL FILTER is a Cartridge or some kind of Spin ON

I have been going to a Dodge Dealership for normal services
They will only use their Parts Dept. products & their prices are Jacked up & then there is the Labor Prices in the Express Lane or Service Dept.

Walmart has Mopar Products, ie: Rotella Motor Oil
Their Labor Prices are much more reasonable

My Ram is still under a Mopar Warranty, so i will continue to use the Mopar Oil Filter, Fuel Filter & Rotella Oil

It's a cartridge style filter, so is the fuel filter.
oil filter part #: 68492616AA
fuel filter part#: 68235275AB
With both filters make sure the filters snap into the removable housing. It's possible a new fuel filter won't look like the one that's in there, Ram changed the filter style.
Check Diesel Filter Online and Geno's Garage for some of the best prices. With the reports of cheap knock offs, stay away from Amazon.
Aside from Rotella T6, there is Valvoline Super Blue, Mobil 1 Delvac and Amsoil all make great oil for the engine, none of which will void your warranty. Just be sure to use 5W-40

I've also used Diesel Filters Online for the oil filter on my 2020 Eco. When supply problems hit, my local dealership allowed me to purchase OEM mopar filters online for them to install. I've never stopped this.

If you're OK with your dealership's service other than the parts markup, you could ask about supplying your own (mopar) parts.

Ya can use what ever oil filter you want and T-6 oil should do great in your Eco, in my Cummins I do not use Mopar oil filters, I use Amsoil oil & have the dealer install that way I have proof of oil changes as FCA seem to care a lot about frequency of oil changes. If you have time check to see if Baldwin has oil filters if not use what every you want JMHO

I have asked if i could buy my own OEM Mopar Parts for them to install.
I was told that i could buy anything that i wanted to, BUT they would not Use or install it.

I decided that i will use an Independant Garage

Then i went to a garage that has a great reputation, they are a Chain Franchise, the Garage foreman told me that he did it once for me, but from that point on, he would not allow it to happen again.
They are located in at least 24 States
Then he told me that if the Garage Owner wanted to do it, i could go there on any Monday, because he, the garage foreman had Monday off.

To save the hassle, i will go to the Giant Walmart over in the next town, they will use my parts.
That does not matter, because Walmart is where i buy my Mopar Parts & Liquids any way :)

That's surprising and unfortunate. It sounds like you have local dealerships/garages with more business than they can handle. They feel like they are doing you a favor by servicing your vehicle. My dealership suggested I buy from DieselFiltersOnline when they hit the supply issues. They could not get the Oil or Fuel filter (through their sources) at the time.

If Walyworld is willing to be flexible, beat a path to their door. When i find a business that treats me well, I try to steer everyone in their direction.

I just checked and Walmart does not (yet) carry the Oil filter for my Eco. I'll have to remember to check again in the future.

I did just replace the battery with a Walmart Everstart unit. I called the local store to check on stock. A young lady said they had one, but it looked like it had lead a tough life already. She suggested ordering one for delivery. $50 cheaper than competitors with same day delivery. I was amazed.

I couldn't loosen the drain plug for my first oil change, so I went to my dealer. The dealer used my oil and filter and only charged me $20.00 for their labor. It's hardly worth doing it myself, but I do it to be sure it's done right, especially the long drain time.

I once went to Walmart for an oil change and they refused to do it because my truck did not have an OEM oil drain plug. It has a Fumato valve. I offered to turn the lever on the Fumato valve for them, but they would not allow it.

I run a Fumoto valve as well. I've read stories of oil change places pulling the Fumoto valve out and throwing it away, then installing a traditional drain plug, because they didn't know how to operate it. Great example of why oil change monkeys will never touch my vehicle.

Another OIL Filter question ...

I took my 3.0 liter eco-diesel to a Valvoline Oil Change Shop to get my Oil Change.
I had my own oil filter & oil.
They do not want you to get out of the vehicle.

The guy doing the filter change had a heck of a lot of trouble getting the Filter Housing off, it kept slipping off the Nut.
I asked him if he was using the correct socket.
He told me that it was the correct size & from under the Hood, he quickly showed it to me from under the hood.

Of course i could only tell that it was a Socket, with at least two 12 inch extensions & a ratchet.

I am thinking it might have been a 12 point socket, but i am only guessing

the Nut is 27mm, according to Geno's Garage
nothing in SAE sizes seem to be the same, especially in the 12 point socket sizes.

I will have to watch for a leak under the filter housing.
I should have gone to Walmart

Precision Auto Tune changed it last time, but they told me that i would have to buy the oil change products from them, next time.
they will not use Rotella T6 5w 40 oil & they use off brand filters.
Last time i brought my own products

I changed both the oil/filter and fuel filter on my 2020 a few weeks back. My 1st time doing it by myself.

Both the oil filter and fuel filter Hex nuts are 27mm. Unfortunately, they are plastic. I was able to get the oil filter off with no issue. The fuel filter was tight. I purchased a 27mm 6-point socket to prevent knocking the points off the hex.

Likely what you heard was the socket walking it's way off the filter hex. It's difficult to get a good angle on the socket wrench to keep the socket engaged with the filter. 6-point socket is highly advised.

The filter on my 3'rd gen Eco is a one piece cartridge so the hex nut gets replaced with every filter. No sure about the filter on your '18.

I use Mopar filters (Amazon or Rockauto). I think they're great. Never had a problem.

I want to use parts & recommended Lubricants at least a long as my Extended Warranty is in effect.

My closest Walmart Superstore, carries both the proper
Rotella T6 5w-40 & Mopar Filter

The Timing for the oil change was perfect too, in mid July, i will leave on almost a 6,000 mile Coast to Coast Round Trip,
California to Connecticut

I wonder if a metal Strap Wrench is made, that will fit on the Eco-diesel Oil Filter Housing.
That plastic nut, i think will not last very long.

Especially if the Nut is loosened & tightened, the way that the Valvoline Oil Changer did to mine

I've been using Rotella T-6 for many yrs in my VW TDI. Works great. Getting closer to 300k mi. When it was a DD my ODI was 10k mi. Once went 14k just do to work/life. Although it would usually take a couple quarts between.
