Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from those with more experience on this topic.

I have a 2022 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie, 5.7L HEMI (non-eTorque), currently at 40,000 km. The truck is completely stock and used strictly as a daily driver. I drive mostly short distances, I’m a gentle driver, and I don’t tow or haul.

I’ve been reading about oil catch cans, but I’ll be honest — I don’t know much about them or whether they’re truly necessary for my type of driving. I’ve seen products like the Mishimoto direct bolt-on catch can, which looks well-made and easy to install.

My questions are:

  • For my driving habits, is an oil catch can actually beneficial?
  • Is this more of a “nice-to-have” preventative mod, or unnecessary in my case?
  • Have any of you installed one on a similar setup and noticed real long-term benefits?
  • Are there any downsides (maintenance, cold weather issues, etc.) I should consider?

I plan on keeping the truck long-term and want to take good care of it, but I also don’t want to add parts that don’t provide meaningful value.

Any insight or real-world experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Totally unnecessary.

I was wondering, if a manufacturer does not trust a consumer with a dipstick, why in the world would they trust a consumer with something as complicated as a catch can? They must be thinking of the same consumer who hides their spare key under the hood as lock out protection.(Think about it)
PS--I've had 4 Rams and I've had a catch can on every one of them. My trucks, my choice!

OK… this is not meant to be criticizing:

WHAT is your msg? “I didn’t have one and the throttle failed….. I subsequently had one and it caught junk…and i believe it kep the throttle clean….. and now I don’t have one…”
and you won’t get one…. despite your previous belief it was a good thing?

What changed for you?
That’s fair. If you’re keeping the vehicle for a long time. Get one, I personally feel it is worth it. My current vehicle has the 6.2L but I’m not planning on keeping it for a long time. I apologize for any confusion.
