Has anyone done test on the Penzoil HE oil filter? They make really good oil so i figured they would make decent filter.

Per there website:

"Pennzoil Platinum HE™ oil filters are engineered with an exclusive synthetic-blended 2-ply gradient density filter media designed to remove 99%1 of engine oil impurities while trapping on average over 10 grams of contaminants based on industry tests1. This provides an average 15% greater cleaning ability, and over 3 times the dirt-holding capacity of economy oil filters.

Product Technical benefits:

  • Silicone anti-drain back valve lasts up to 2X longer than conventional nitrile valve to protect against dry starts
  • Keeps oil cleaner than standard oil filters for superior engine protection
  • PTFE impregnated NBR sealing gasket for ease of installation and removal
  • Steel spiral-wound center tube and end caps provide increased internal strength and durability compared to
    cardboard and plastic components
  • Meets or exceeds proposed industry specifications1 for capacity and efficiency"

I did go back and watch the vid in this thread and noted that.I did ck. my boxes and they do say "durable metal screen".I will still be cutting mine open to see.I trust no one.I bought these at amazon for like 6 bucks a pc. Currently the picture of the filter on amazon still has the box that says metal screen in case you are looking.I will post after I cut mine open and see if the filter matches the box.Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me!

Fleetgard is for commercial engines, like Donaldson. They don't make filters for consumer / retail engines, except for the Cummins ISB 6.7 (which is used in Ram and many other industrial applications).

Donaldson doesn't have a synthetic (blue) filter to fit, neither does Fleetguard last time I looked. Fleetguard used to call their spun glass filters stratapore. I used them on my old Cummins 6B5.9T engine in the 90's.

I heard Cummins was looking to sell Fleetguard, but don't know what happened. Also heard they closed their Iowa plant and moved to Mexico. This was at the time I was let go.......early 2016.

Only oil filters I use while the truck is still new and under warranty is the OEM Mopar blue filters. If that fails it’s on FCA to explain why their OEM parts failed.

I'm sure that is how it will go, they will gladly explain it to you and very likely apologize and give you warranty service and very like;y a rental car and hotel room and a vacation voucher for putting you through all that trouble.

I have read through the last 35 pages or so and just want to thank everyone for their input and for sharing their knowledge and experience. I learned a great deal and will be switching to the RP 20-500 at my next OCI. Once again, THANKS!

Update for y'all - I had a Fram Ultra Synthetic XG5 Oil Filter in stock I bought early in 2020 that I used this weekend (for motorhome engine, not Ram Truck). It had marketing spiel on the carton definitely indicating these filters were dual media all-synthetic before Trico bought them out and cheapened them, changing to synthetic blend media without metal screen backing. Notably, that's what their former Tough Guard Filters were.

Here's a pic.......
Fram XG5 Oil Filter Carton 2020.jpg

Ultra Synthetic was "2-ply synthetic. Metal screen reincfored. 99% efficient @ down to 20 micron, silicone anti-drain back valve."

Well, I think we can safely conclude the SRT filters are paper media. Might be a "premium" paper media, but still paper. Cut mine open the other day that had 5400 miles on it with 2 camping trips into the NH mountains where the oil saw 245⁰ for extended periods. Not the worst I've seen which is why I think its a premium paper media but the pleats are definitely waving.20211013_195717.jpg

That's disappointing. Thanks for updating, real bummer because some where definitely syn, and some are for sure paper.

I just installed the royal purple 20-820 filter on this oil change and put RL 0w40 in my 6.4. I can honestly say the truck sounds much better at idle so far. I had previously ran RL 5w40 but noticed I had consumed about half to a full quart of oil after a couple thousand miles so I switched back over to the Amsoil but didn’t feel it was smooth as the RL. Giving it another try but with a larger filter this time and going to see how it goes. Maybe and hopefully the larger filter is contributing to the better flow

Another option for you is redline 5w30, which is thicker then most 0w40's at the end of an interval, and gives you better cold performance, better then 0w40. Now, redline 0w40 is thicker then most 0w40's, and in fact most 5w40's. Because redlines are so viscosity stable, that 5w30 will be thicker then srt 0w40 throughout most of the time in the sump.
