I've been researching wheels/tires and canopies for the last few weeks. I can really only purchase one or the other and can't help but ask here :).

Should I get new wheels (17" fuel trophy) and tires ( 35" OC IIs)

or

Should I get a canopy or tonneau cover?

My dilemma is that I commute over a mountain pass here in southern oregon and its getting to be rain/ice/snow season, so a good tire would really help the drive, plus I ski a lot and go to the local ski area a few times a week.

Filpside is that it rains/snows a lot here and I don't have a canopy or tonneau cover so all my dry stuff would have to get suffed in back of the crew cab - with a baby sometimes.

Opinions appreciated because I have an appt for the wheels/tires tomorrow, but the one who must be obeyed said I have to choose between them.:emotions122:

Wouldn't even be a question for me... tires all day. Safety first, that cover won't do you any good if you wreck the truck.

No way, plasti dip your **** like everyone else does and use your tires and sensors up first. I like your rims as well. those are better then other stock rams. Is that a 4x4? I took my stock junk through a blizzard in nor cal a year after I bought it, drove through snow compacted 12 inches thick without so much as a slide. Your tires will do just fine in snow, probably even better then a new MT! Check out linex diamond back covers.

I thought about that - but the wheel place is willing to give me $500 for trade in credit. So if I did it now that's $500 less than later.

I would probably go with tires/wheels, then set up some craigslist alerts for tonneaus and try to find a used one for a good price.

However, if you could deviate a little, maybe new tires with factory wheels and a tonneau.

What do you think I could get for them? They have about 9000 miles on 'em. Chrome is in new shape.

Yeah, maybe not didn't realize 9000 miles, 500 seams fair but up to a $1000 maybe. if they truly are going to get that off the quoted price, seams fair. Shop around. There are a ton of guys like me that those chrome rims are a good upgrade. These crappers are a step up from work truck rims, but I hate'm. I can afford new rims, but for me it's principal, I have to use my tires up first. Those rims you have a lot of old school guys would like. Very popular old school look. I'd put them on craigslist for a week at a grand see see what happens.

The thing is the stock tires won't last that long. Most people are lucky to get 30000 miles out of them. I'm at 16000 and they're well over 50% worn. But with that said, I agree with Burla that you should use your stock tires up. I'd get a good cover and enjoy being able to keep your bed dry.

I'm in the topper/cover side as well. Use up the tires then if you need to replace the tires you can at any time throw them on the old wheels and buy a set of wheels later. You don't have to buy the whole wheel and tire combo all at once, this at least allows you to spread out the cost of items over a longer period which makes it easier to hide it from the wife.

You already have tires. You need a cover. Plus you're going to need new tires when those wear out making them a necessity. Get the cover while you have the money. It'll be easier to convince the wife you have to have tires when those are worn. Then you can finance them for 0% interest for 6-12 months.

I got 400 out of my stock tires with 10,000 kms in them. No wheels, just tires

I'd do 35s on the factory wheels and the cover

I can't see your picture 'cause I'm at work, but, I'd do tires only for now and look at a cover. You can paint your wheels to change the look if you want. Throw in some Bilsteins to level the front end and you'll be good to go.
