I took the Ram for a drive, it took FOREVER to get the transmission up to temp, not sure if it just had to circulate for a bit or what.

Trans finally did get to 190° ish.

Coolant temp climbed a bit over 203°. Temps seemed to get to 206° to 208° before they would drop. Did get 212° or so, not unusual for me.

When I rechecked it, it only took about 4 oz. to top it off.

I will probably be glued to the temps for a bit, really freaked me out when it overheated.

I did not know they fail open, @GTyankee, I always thought only the 'failsafe' ones did that.

Well I had a bit of a struggle getting the coolant filled on mine, but she is done, yay!

Thank you to all for your help and encouraging words, that's what makes this site so awesome.
I think that the “Robert Shaw” design thermostat failed in the “open” position. My 1998 Chevrolet 6.5TD has what I believe is the Robert Shaw designed thermostat. It looks totally different than the 5.7 hemi thermostat that looks like the regular thermostats.
By the way, never heard or read about any of those thermostats failing.

Yeah, I'm gonna be keyed up on my coolant temps for a bit, during my drive home today, I hit 224° for a bit, it did come down eventually, but it hung between 212° and 219° for a good bit.

One thing I remember is when the truck was newer, I never noticed my temps above 203° or so.

My temp needle hung right near the halfway mark, and only barely went over half.

It's probably just me, but there are alot of miles on my Ram, and an electric fan going intermittent or even a temp sensor going wonky wouldn't surprise me, either.

Will take me a bit to get over the overheat incident.

Are you 100% sure that all the air has been bled out of the system?

My wife's pacifica had the waterpump fail - I know what you mean about taking some time to get over the overheat!

I am reasonably sure, I did a full heat up run, and when it had cooled enough to recheck, it only took about 4 oz. I will try to get somewhere I can get the nose uphill and see what happens.

Wouldn't surprise me if something else is weak in the system.

Update: I still occaisionally get temps ~219°.

Have decided I will get a 190° tstat to try in the next month or so.

Since I have replaced the radiator, I thought I was loosing coolant somewhere in the system. I would check it every few days and it would be slightly low, just a few ounces, enough to not show in the neck of the radiator.

Did this several times.

I got stuck in traffic on an incline going up a bridge and I must've had some air trapped in the system somewhere. After that, I topped it off and the coolant level hasn't dropped since.

Go figure.

I still am glued to my evic, watching the temps....lol

@jesse9284, this is the thread, but there's more:

In this thread, got to post # 112. It's on page 6. Have a read on this thread as well. I'd be interested if yours is similar.
