I have a 1999 Ram 5.9 2wd that I assume came with the death flash from the factory. Where do you guys recommend buying a PCM that doesnt have the flash?

I've also got the death flash on mine, given that its a 99, there is a good chance you have it. Just check on the passenger side firewall under the hood for the PCM and look for a sticker that says something about a factory authorised update or flash.

As for getting rid of it, I would buy a tuner and get someone like FlyinRyan to make a tune for you. You are looking at 300ish for the Tuner if you go with SCT, and around 400ish for Ryan. But you are getting a tune custom for your specific truck and any mods you put on it. In my opinion, its very worth it. There are some things he requires you do though, like the plenum repair, and air/fuel sensors instead of O2 sensors. Other than that any mods are up to you.

For the plenum repair, i've heard a lot of different things, and I know dapepper9 has some really good information on the subject. All i'm going to do is replace the plenum gasket with a slightly thicker felpro gasket, as that seems to be a permanent fix according to some of the pro's around here. Ther is also the option of replacing the upper intake with a mopar or hughes kit, or just a replacement plenum pan.

If you buy a pre tuned PCM, just make sure its the same year, and the same engine, or you will run into harness issues.

Bought the truck from my granddad just before he died. He had bought the truck new. From the paperwork, he had the plenum leak repaired at the dealership in 2011. So at least that is taken care of.

Did the pre-deathflash not have any torque management at all?

I believe the pre-deathflash did have torque management, but I will have to defer to a higher knowledge on that one. I would make sure that paperwork says they repaired the plenum itself. Paperwork stating the problem had been fixed was also given out when they routed the spark plug cables and flashed the PCM.

Paperwork said that they repaired a "plenum leak", so hopefully that means they actually fixed the leak. But, nothing would surprise me.

Deathflash is for pre-ignition and ******* the ignition timing.
Torque management kills the torque in the low end to save the trans. But some how ends up hurting it.
Deathflash is applicable to all trucks, same with torque management. BUT, 96s didn't have torque management for some reason

Ive read where a company B&M will flash a pcm and totally take torque management off. Curious what opinions are on if that is a bad thing, or if that is ok.

You have a 96 plus so waste of money in my opinion. They can flash your pcm and do a tune but thats it. No adjustment from there unless you send it in to them again. Or you can simply get an SCT handheld programmer and get a tune for that that will do the same thing but can be updated after any future mods you may or may not have planned AND can be removed at any time for whatever reason. Search around recent performance section threads and you'll find more info on that stuff

This is why my Mountaineer with a 185,000 mile Windsor rated at 30 less horsepower miles runs stronger than my re-ringed, re-bearinged Magnum.

Hell, pretty sure the Mounty, even with it's all-wheel-drive could chirp the tires off the line on pavement. My Ram certainly won't do that.

Stupid "boat anchor" reprogramming. I'm gonna revel the day when my ECU meets Mr. SCT...
