HI, new at all of this so please be patient. I am possibly going to be purchasing a 2012 dodge ram crew cab hemi 5.7 with 106000 miles on it. Just trying to get some opinions on if the truck can handle this kind of mileage or am I going to start having to fix everything once I purchase. Really just looking for some advice on this truck in any way, whether it be things to look for when I test drive it or under the hood or the body or is this way to many miles on a truck of this age, repair costs, anything that you feel might be of help to me. Thank you

I have a 2012 I bought new and have had very few issues, but I'm only at 63K miles.
RAM is a great truck and should give you reasonably trouble free service for some time to come.

Engine and trans should be good as long as maintenance was regular.

Part of regular Hemi maintenance is changing spark plugs every 30K miles. If private sale, ask owner how many times they've been changed.
**There are 16 plugs not just 8. Good trick question if he says he does his own maintenance or you are suspicious: "So how many are there, 8?"

If a dealer, ask for maintenance records, or at least a summary of what they have done to it, and if a Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealer whether there is a record of dealer maintenance by VIN.

If you have a mechanic check it, ask them to look into the throttle body to check for build up on the underside, and also pull a couple spark plugs to see what kind of plug changes it has received. Build up on the throttle body could cause rough idle or sluggish response later. Old plugs give you an idea if it was maintained. Also have your mechanic check the age of the fluids in diff and transfer cases. If its old it probably did not receive the frequency of maintenance it should have. All the underside fluid should be changed around 60-65K miles and again at 120K.

Some other items:
Listen for Hemi tick. Injectors make a certain amount of noise like plastic parts ticking, but the Hemi tick is fairly high in the engine from the lifters and sounds like metal tapping. A lot of Hemi engines have it and it can sometimes be treated with better quality oil.

Also listen for a tick on cold start that quiets as engine warms--that would be a broken exhaust manifold bolt(s)--not a show stopper, but you need to lower your offer for the repair you'd have to pay for.

Check up under wheel well liners, both front and under the bed to make certain fenders haven't started rusting on the inside considering PA is salt town USA.

All about history and maintenance...

This I had a 2010 with 147 when I bought it it lacked mantaince so I had to put 1-2k worth of brakes shock steering rack tie rods but it went to 170k with only the solenoid pack and a couple tire pressure sensors going out. If you keep the maintance it'll be a great truck

Hopefully you know a mechanic that can go over the truck for you. I f it has been reasonably maintained, it should get to 200000 with out major issues.

I bought an '09 with 118K on it. I got it from a dealer, so there was some warranty on it from them. If I'd have bought it from a private seller, I'd have had it looked over by a mechanic beforehand. There are a few Rams on here with double the mileage and still going.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the good vibes and tips on the truck, unfortunately, I won't be a forum member anymore. The one salesman sold it to someone else, 'claiming he didn't know I was working with the other salesman'. Wont ever buy a vehicle from them!!!

Couple thoughts:

  1. Lot of Rams out there, keep looking. There's always another 'good deal' out there!
  2. The new body style will be out soon. It looks great! When that happens, the older 4th gens will start to drop in value fairly quick. You'll probably find an even better deal on a used one.
  3. Given that a lot of guys are getting $11k off sticker (and how much used Rams are selling for), one could make a compelling argument (and many have for sure) that buying new truck with 0-miles and a long warranty make a lot of sense. If you could get 5 years under warranty, it might work out to be cheaper than one with higher miles and some repairs.
  4. 2012's don't get that great of fuel economy. But they do have some old-school features (that would be non-features) like a 6-spd trans and some other things which in some ways may be nicer. Newer trucks are going to have 8spd trannys and more reliance on electronics (generally a good thing), and get better fuel economy too. But sometimes more electronics equals more PITA for maintenance too, especially if you plan to keep it a long time. Depends on how you look at it.
  5. I have this feeling that we're getting close to a 'market correction' pretty soon. If that happens, pickup truck prices will drop like a rock. Then you'll get a great deal. But its hard to time things with economic cycles.

Given all that, I still bought used with high miles (150k). Found what I thought was a great deal. Even with all the miles, mine runs great, drives great, no squeaks or rattles. Feels tight. No problems (yet). On thing I found distressing is the insurance on my Ram was 2.5x more than my former GMC ...and it is the same coverage. I had a lengthy discussion with two insurance agents on the phone and they couldn't figure out why it was so much more, other than 'it could do more damage because it's a little heavier.' So, be aware of that.

Take your time - it took me 10 months to find the right one for me. Maybe more miles that I would have wanted, but I'm not concerned. And I smile every time I walk out to get in it.

Not giving up yet!
Back to pick everyone's brains again. Came across a 2009 Ram 1500 Quad Cab SLT 4WD, with a V8 4.7 liter automatic 5 speed with overdrive with 66k miles on it. specs says it has oversize off road tires (not sure what that means but I know the tread is huge!), also can use flex fuel (haven't investigated this yet)
So give me some thoughts on what you think? I think RAM is what I want, I hear and read really good things about them.

What are your primary uses and needs for a truck? It's hard recommend something w/o knowing your needs/wants? Are you just looking to commute back/fourth to work, pull a trailer (how heavy and often?), what kind of driving/hauling, etc? People hauler (kids, adults, etc)? How many/often? Fuel mileage expectations? What are you driving now?

09's are going back a ways, although the one you're looking at isn't high mileage. 4.7 is a solid engine. They start to get rusty by then in the salt states.

Use it for taking kayaks, hauling a small trailer with riding tractors, some loads of wood for my dad. it will be the vehicle I use to haul my family as my 2 door pt cruiser doesn't have much room in for more than 2 people. My fiancé wants to go out in the snow and do a little mountain horsing around, occasionally to work but I only travel 5 miles for that, other than that, nothing major.
I should probably check the car fax to see if I can figure out where it may have come from for the salt issue.
Thanks

I had a 4.7 2004 Ram SLT that lasted about 160000 then the motor died. Didn't have the power of the hemi but more than enough for what I needed. I occasionally towed a bobcat, loaded it with 2 scoops mulch, landscaping gravel, dirt, and even hauled two pallets of sod (that was a bit too much) and drove 50 miles with it. No regrets on having bought that truck.

Definitely get the Carfax and take the VIN to a dealer if you can. Check on-line the cost of those oversize tires...some can get expensive. Mileage is low and seems to be only 8000-9000 per year. That is good if it was driven infrequently but not good if it was lots of short trips.

Best advice that was given to me many years back was 'get a color you like'. If you don't like the color, you won't be happy with it no matter how well equipped and you'll want to be rid of it in a year or two. BTW, better check that your fiancée likes the color, too! Happy wife (to be), happy life.

I 'assume'd and proved that saying to be true!
Lucky hubby-to-be to have a wife-to-be who wants a truck!
