hello all,

First post on the forum. Bought a 2014 sport about a month and a half a ago and it only came with one key fob. Looking on the interwebs looks like I can buy another one to serve as a backup for about $100. Do I have to go through the dealer to get it programmed to start the truck? Would hate to spend the extra $$ if I can do it myself

I had a fob done for my 14 a few months back by a locksmith for $50 bucks and he cut a key for me. I brought him a fob that was programmed to another truck. He told me he had just received the tool he needed to deprogram the day before. However, he switched out the chip instead with a cleared chip since he had not used the tool and didn't want to chance having me wait around longer than normal. Anyhow, a locksmith may be cheaper and the dealer apparently is not the only one who can unlock them now if you happen to get a used programmed key off someone.

No. If your truck has remote start, you need one of these:

Or this:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/281737390426

Also, I can confirm from firsthand experience that the standard 3 button key, will work for remote start, if you take the board out and put it in one of these 4 button housings.

I installed a Mopar remote start kit in my 2013 and put my 3 button boards in these housings, and it works. I now have 4 keys.

The empty housing:

Really, they now have the ability to reprogram key fobs??? Must be something relatively new because it use to be that they were a one and done key fob..... I'll have to check into it.

Yes, keyless go likely required something different. I didn't notice that he had keyless go.

Yes, it was new to the locksmith. He had just received whatever device he needed to do it. I think it was about 4-6 months ago when I went to him.

Another thing to consider is just calling a locksmith for the entire setup. He had a tray full of ram fobs and also switched out a torn skin with a broken contact for my lock button for $10 bucks on my old fob. If I ever need a fob, I'll call that locksmith first to see if he has one.
