I wont bother with the why it works great for me, but Im going to buy a new Longhorn dually and if i put a little of the $20,000 down on one of my credit cards for just 1-2 months before i would pay it back off i can buy now. Anybody have any idea what kind of fee the dealership would be charged by th CC Company? I would like to know how much to negotiate what they will want to add to the PP .... Thanks

Don't know for sure but I remember asking years ago about using a credit card and the dealer would not do it, said it was an unsecured loan. You might want to ask the dealership.

i think most dealerships will have a limit on how much down. usually 1000 but some will take 2500. i believe both mcard and visa will charge them about 3%. i've never had a dealer ask extra to cover.

My experience has been that it's capped at 1000 - I've done it before just as a security deposit type thing. The merchant fee is usually around 3% but varies depending on what type of card is used. I'm sure dealers just don't want to mess with that. Aside from the fee, CC companies are EXTREMELY consumer friendly so a buyer could just contest the charge later and get is reversed which opens a whole kettle of worms for the dealer.

As a business owner I suppose I like credit cards due to no more bad checks but the fees and people's ability to reverse the charges definitely reduces some of the appeal.

i don't know if its a canadian thing or not, but new or used, as long as its at a dealer, i've always put down the maximum amount i could on credit card. between 1000 (chrysler) and 2500 on a used murano for my ex (hyundai). never a complaint. they've always given me the option to put the amount into the financing and get the cc charge reversed by them, or leave it towards the down payment. and never have they wanted to add a charge for it. we're talking 500 to 1000 usually on a 25K plus vehicle. i can't see why they would complain except if you try to do it with an amex. i had a boss one time who had as part of his deal a 90,000 limit per year amex credit card. Not for expenses. And he could use it for anything he liked it (he was a diabetic and had a bar fridge at work and used to order in groceries for his fridge on his card). One year he bought a new vette worth 70 odd thousand dollars with it and they took it.

All good info thanks, I had my local dealer tell me it was $2500 and it was "set by law" so being the anally curious person that i am I called a bordering state (2 actualy) and both dealerships laughed and said they had never heard of such a law and would be happy to take Ccd as some of the down. Both said they would just want to know up front. So then I called the next closest dealer to me and asked the same question. Told the sales man i might want to use as much as 5 or 6 thousand, he talked to his "boss" and came back with "sure that would be fine just let us know up front" So much for $2,500 be set in law...... LOL Even at 4% their fee would only be what, $200? Not a big deal for either I or the dealer when talking 75k truck
