i just ordered a set of spark plugs from moe's performance, do the NGK set already come pre gapped or do i have to gap them myself? and i know this is a dumb question but what is the electrode gap for these 5.7 engines?

Do you have an owners manual for your truck?
In my 2014 it says gap should be .043 and that I should change the plugs at 100K miles.
Not sure if that is different for 2012.

Edit - Always check the gap on new plugs before installing them. That plug model may suit other applications and be gapped differently, or get bumped during shipping.

Because we're special :D

Ok, to answer your question, the NGK's you just ordered are a copper-electrode plug, not platinum.

Kind of crazy to leave plugs in an aluminum head for 100k miles anyway IMO. I'm pretty sure I won't be doing that. Learned that lesson on a Ford Triton.

May sound dumb but... Can I switch my 12 to a platinum plug and swap the every 75 to 90,000 so they don't sit in the heads for 100,000?

Always double check the gap, never know what can happen to them during shipping.
Also don't forget to use anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs before installing!

Doesn't sound dumb. People have done it. In reality, there is no reason to change your plugs at 30K if you're not having any problems or misfires. Plenty of people get 50-60k out of copper plugs. Whichever you choose, just make sure you put anti-seize on them when you install them so leaving them in doesn't make then hard to remove. I plan to remove the platinum plugs in mine this spring when it warms up just to anti-seize them so I don't have problems down the road.

Yup, if you'd like.

You can change them at 99,999 miles too...so that they don't sit in the heads for 100k miles too. :)

I plan to stick with the OEM coppers when the time comes (I'm only at 15k now on my '12).

I'm with this guy.

Not a fan of platinum personally (made my truck run like **** when they clogged up), but if that's what you want to do and your truck runs like a ***** ape, by all means go for it.

As for the keeping coppers in, if you don't have a misfire or a dramatic loss in mpg, keep 'em in.

I changed the plugs in my dad's 02 4.7 13k ago. They had 30k on them and still ran fine, barely any wear at all. Likely could have kept them in for at least another 15k, but meh. Already had the plugs and had the air box off. :devilfinger:

From what i understand, the 2012 model that suggests that you change the plugs every 30,000 miles ignition system is not set up for platinum plugs so you can run them, but it won't make any difference if the ignition system itself isn't set up for it. Best bet is to run what is suppose to go in the truck and change them every 30 to 45,000 miles depending on what you use your truck for.

When I got mine from Moe's, every one of the boxes had been opened. I checked every plug and they were all gapped perfectly. I'd swear that Matt checked them all before he sent them to me. I never asked, but I think he did.

Does anyone know the reason why the 2013 Ram 1500 manual says to change the spark plugs every 30,000 miles or 3 years on the 5.7L HEMI, but the 2014 manual suggests 100,000 miles or 10 years? Is this perhaps just an oversight by Ram with not changing the information soon enough on the 2013? :wtf2:

They changed the 2014's to platinum. 2013's are still copper. People have put platinum plugs in the pre 2014 hemi's, some have zero issues, some have cold start issues.

Considering the engines in the 2013 & 2014's are identical, do you think there will be a issue if I switch over to the platinum plugs when it comes time to change them in my '13? I'm a noob when it comes to spark plug maintenance, so any info or help is appreciated. Thanks!

Should be fine.

The "police" packages used the 100k plugs prior to '14
