Disconnected my uconnect 5.0 on my 2017 ram 1500 to install a backup camera. When I plugged everything back in, the radio just comes with updating system do not remove USB. However I didn't connect a USB drive or anything. I dicconnected the battery but it didn't help. Any ideas?

I had the same issue, had to just wait it out was about 30 minutes of sitting in the truck without turning it off just in acc mode and it finally completed the task.

That's interesting. So how Does it update without the USB? Does it have wifi built in? Either way, glad I didn't break something. Thought I had to take it to the dealer. I'll try this soon. Thank you.

Yeah mine 2016 had the same setup and had built in wifi. My 2018 is the 8.4 and it's done the same thing so I just let it run the course and it worked with it too.

Hi marinemail05,

Sorry to hear about your concerns with your Uconnect system. I believe what @Ram-engineer is referring to is our Over the Air updates, these are currently only being released to vehicle's with 8.4A (Uconnect 4C) and 8.4AN (Uconnect 4C Nav) radios. Since your vehicle is equipped with a 5.0 system we would recommend visiting your local dealership for further assistance, please send us a PM if you need further assistance!

Thanks! Took it in this morning. They did a quick scan and said there are a bunch of communication errors. Might need a new PCM or Radio. They are going to call me back later today......

I'm having similar issues. My radio was not starting in the morning, I think because of the cold. Was able to finally get it to accept and update, hoping it would fix the problem. NO SUCH LUCK. I got the message again that it was searching for a USB to do an update so I plugged in the USB and now it is stuck in a loop between Insert USB and the Wait 2-5 minutes. Woke up this morning with a dead truck. It tried to run the update all night long. Can't get it to find the USB now. is there a way to just get the "head unit" to just turn off so i don't kill my battery?

Your issue is slightly different from mine. My screen is just always stuck on the image I posted above. Dealer said it is dead and ordered me a new radio. It’s been 2 months waiting for it to come in..... I’ve only owned the truck for 3 months.

I know that this thread is quite old, but I though perhaps this could help someone.

The issue started when one day I went to drive to work and my 8.4 with nav. was just black like a dead screen. A few minutes later, a dark screen with a red outline popped up saying there was a problem starting the application software and try to start using the USB port or something like that. I don't remember exactly what it said. I checked the Uconnect website, and saw I was due for an update so I downloaded everything and got my update USB stick ready. Since the radio was stuck on that red outlined screen, as soon as plugged in the USB stick, it asked if I wanted to update the software by leaving the update USB stick installed, and that the update would begin automatically in 30 seconds. The update appeared to begin just fine, but after a minute or two, that is when this issue began.

I had the EXACT same problem. The loop between the dark "wait 2-5 minutes" and the light "insert update in USB" message screens. The loop will not stop, even when truck is turned off. The unit will continue to cycle between these two screens and drain the battery unless the head unit fuse (20 amp located all by itself under the master cylinder) is pulled, or the battery is disconnected. Regardless of how long you remove the fuse, or disconnect the battery, the head unit remains locked in this loop when it is powered back on.

Here is how I fixed this problem:

1) Remove the USB stick you are using for the update that has these two files:
SWDL.ISO
SWDL.UPD

2) Delete the file SWDL.ISO

3) Re-Install the USB stick that has ONLY the file:
SWDL.UPD

4) You will see the dark "Wait 2-5 Minutes" screen one last time, but when it would normally cycle to the light "Please insert update in USB" screen, it will actually begin the update process.

Hope this helps.
