I had the same issue, had to just wait it out was about 30 minutes of sitting in the truck without turning it off just in acc mode and it finally completed the task.Disconnected my uconnect 5.0 on my 2017 ram 1500 to install a backup camera. When I plugged everything back in, the radio just comes with updating system do not remove USB. However I didn't connect a USB drive or anything. I dicconnected the battery but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Yeah mine 2016 had the same setup and had built in wifi. My 2018 is the 8.4 and it's done the same thing so I just let it run the course and it worked with it too. That's interesting. So how Does it update without the USB? Does it have wifi built in? Either way, glad I didn't break something. Thought I had to take it to the dealer. I'll try this soon. Thank you.

Hi marinemail05,
Sorry to hear about your concerns with your Uconnect system. I believe what @Ram-engineer is referring to is our Over the Air updates, these are currently only being released to vehicle's with 8.4A (Uconnect 4C) and 8.4AN (Uconnect 4C Nav) radios. Since your vehicle is equipped with a 5.0 system we would recommend visiting your local dealership for further assistance, please send us a PM if you need further assistance!

I'm having similar issues. My radio was not starting in the morning, I think because of the cold. Was able to finally get it to accept and update, hoping it would fix the problem. NO SUCH LUCK. I got the message again that it was searching for a USB to do an update so I plugged in the USB and now it is stuck in a loop between Insert USB and the Wait 2-5 minutes. Woke up this morning with a dead truck. It tried to run the update all night long. Can't get it to find the USB now. is there a way to just get the "head unit" to just turn off so i don't kill my battery?
