Does the transfer case try to shift into 4X4? Is the truck rolling while trying to shift into 4X4? For 4X4 Lock (High range) you can do this while driving up to 55 mph, for 4X4 Low the transmission needs to in neutral and the truck moving less that 5 mph.

Hello crash,

prior changing rear differential my 4x4 was working and engaging with not issue.

after changing my rear differential i tried to engage my 4x4 it works but it get locked you cant drive. it gives me a sign of clear differential is not compatible. however, i will change my differential again and i will check again. is there option i can identify my transform case has issue ?

If the truck is running the factory tire size, take the truck onto the freeway and get up to 73 MPH and make sure the transmission has shifted into 8 gear. If the engine RPMs are at or above 2000 RPMs then the rear axle ratio is 3.92, if RPMs are about 1800 or less then the axle ratio is 3.55 if it's closer to 1600 then it's. 3.21
Or you spin the driveshaft by hand and note how many turns it takes to spin the tire around once. Draw a line on both the tire and driveshaft, 3.92 should take almost 4 full turns.

Look for a small sticker on the drivers side axle tube,it should have the gear ratio's listed for both rear ends.
I'd hazard a guess you're replacement diff doesn't have the same ratio as your original diff had as Crash alluded to above

Dear crash,

what an amazing advice, thank you for valuable information. currently am waiting new differential and if didnt fit, then will do test as you mention above and will get back with hopefully positive result.

Why not try the road test/rpm check first?

That's much less work than swapping a diff.

Do they still attach axle ratio tags to differentials ?

I guess not, or we wouldnt be having this discussion

There is still the old 'jack it up, rotate a wheel and count the rotation of the driveshaft' trick

That one is pretty simple
