Don't recall saying it folded down every time you open the console, but I can be a bit more pedantic: Watching the 2021 Ford F-150 one fold to get out of the way of the console opening forward to create a flat work surface hurts my eyes. I don't like the mechanics of how it folds down after the button is pushed, that a button needs to be pushed for this process to start(why no micro switch trigger on open), or that this was their winning solution. From what I saw it's not folding to get out of the way of the console opening, it folds down so you can fold the console forward to create a solid work surface for people that work out of their trucks. It's much easier to work on a computer a little further forward than on top of where the console lid is. I think it's an interesting design, though not something I need personally. The console should open as normal for storage with the shifter in it's normal position.
I spent many hours with my laptop comfortably sitting on the middle seat of my old truck with the column shifter, or using the space to fill out paper work. If it was going to be a while I'd often sit in the back seat using the back of the middle seat as a table. I'm expecting the same from my new RAM and it's dash mounted knob.
I'll give them half points for leaving the rear cup holders accessible.
