Hello, I'm new here and hoping to get some assistance.

I recently bought a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 gas engine with 129k. I bought it knowingly with a bad transmission and replaced with a Napa trans. The first one they sent me had a torque converter issue so they sent me a new one and then was installed. I replaced the exhaust, o2 sensor, cooler lines, and has a new radiator to stay within warranty for the trans.

Now, here's the issue. It runs and idles smooth but when I'm driving or I let it idle long enough, it will randomly shut off. No knock, not buck, just shuts off like you turned the key off. Sometimes I can drive 50 miles fine, or other times can't leave the driveway before it dies. When it does this, the "overdrive off" switch will light up. I had a friends diagnostic tool and it also calls for a bad trans temp senor too. The last part is that after it randomly dies, if you try to restart truck with key still it the on position it will crank for awhile until starting. But, if you turn the key off and back on again it fires right up like it;s supposed to.

Hopefully someone has some insight. Thanks a bunch.

I would go ahead and do the trans temp sensor then. If it thinks it's getting too hot it will kick it out of o/d and can shut it down. It may be as simple as bad connection where the sensor plugs in our just bad sensor. Often times those "reman" units only replace what they find bad, otherwise the rest of the parts are original.

Did you change the crank sensor while you had the tranny out? I would look there....

Also sounds like a weak coil. Easy to change and not expensive

Hey thanks guys for the replies. I'll give that stuff a look. I have another symptom to add. Now when it dies it acts like the battery completely died (nothing works, it acts like no battery even in the truck) until I jump start it. When it's being jumped and you go to start it, it kills everything and is completely dead again. I'm thinking a possible shorting issue somewhere? Thanks for the help

Did you replace or drill out the check valve on the transmission cooler line coming from radiator? In a trans or converter swap many times debris will collect in that check valve and cause the trans to run hot and kick overdrive out. Also, have you had the battery tested? Is the alternator gauge showing that it's charging?
