Rear diff toast again

Barely 300 miles after getting the truck back from dealer the rear diff is toasted again.


Making a loud screeching popping noise. Binding dragging. Just sounds awful.


Smoke pouring out the vent tube and so hot water instantly boils on the cover and pumpkin

It was an off the assy line axle. Not rebuild the one in the truck.

wait, so your original rear end went out, you got a replacement and that's toast again in 300 miles??? I generally don't believe in coincidence or bad luck but holy crap! The dealer better pony up for #3. If that one dies, that ford link might be the way to go...

That said, this is more than a coincidence unless the tech forgot to put oil in it and depending on the diff- friction modifier. It almost sounds like there is something out of alignment. Did you notice it dog tracking at all? While that usually won't cook a diff that quickly, if it's bad enough it sure could, especially on one that hasn't had a chance to bake.

No computer controls on the diff.

Even without a friction modifier I dunno if it would roast THAT fast. Do they ship a complete axle assy. wet or dry? Maybe tech thought there was oil when it was actually dry? At this point thats where my money is... given how hot he said it was.

At first I was thinking the same thing about something being out of alignment, but even if the axle is shifted left or right, that would get taken up by the rear U joint. If it were cocked front or back on one side, it MAY roast his diff but he'd be struggling to keep it straight and burning tires off too. Don't think he's lifted, so there should be no change to pinion angle... wtf else effects a diff?? lol

Yeah for sure, the computer comment was just a poke at all the nanny ******** on these trucks.

My money is on a dry diff for sure. I have burnt bearings out from a diff that was out of alignment, but it took a bit and that thing was dog-tracking like mad- I couldn't keep it straight. Ended up being a bad spring shackle that caused it, the leaf pack and diff mount was completely out of whack. A brand new diff that hasn't worn in a bit has less of a tolerance level for things out of spec- but it shouldn't fry it. Who knows though- it was the only other thing that crossed my mind. I don't even know where else to think of checking? It has to be a no oil situation.

lack of a friction modifier wouldnt do that. the diff was either set up horribly wrong, which for it to blow quickly like that was probably making some nasty sounds/vibrations from the get go, or somebody didnt put oil in it. most likely the latter. a similar thing happened to my cousin, but his was a rebuilt diff they forgot to put oil in.

Regional manager has refused warranty on the second diff. I have talked to customer service till I'm blue in the face. They lack the will or balls to stand up to him.

Pics were sent by dealer to region mgr. he did not personally look at the truck. Reason for denial: environmental heat damage.........


So I found a complete rear axle with 3.92 gears. Going to swap it myself.

Truck is being towed home tomorrow. Rear diff being acquired Friday. Pics will be posted. R/R will be done Saturday. Then I'll decide whether I'm keeping the truck(not likely) or trade for a ford/chevy.

If I do keep it, this will be my FINAL chrysler vehicle. No more. EVER!!

First thing to do is video opening the diff cover to see if it has oil in it. If not, you have them by the ballz.

I get that you're upset, and understandably so. But if you're aim to is to avoid reliability issues switching to a Ford or a Chevy is going to do little to alleviate your issues. We work on 10 chevys and 5 Ford's to every 1 ram at my shop. The problems they seem to have are from generally poor engineering or using crappy components.

That aside, I can't believe the **** luck. How can they possibly not uphold the warranty when it barely has any mileage on it. That's insanity to not stand behind your work like that.
