They can be done if you have the proper equipment such as a press and a dial indicator with a magnetic base. As far as specialty tools, youll need a tool to adjust the collars used for backlash and carrier bearing pre load. I made my own and it worked great for the one time i used it. A diy for the tool can be found on a few different dakota forums and they also have a few diy's for the entire diff rebuild. If youre familiar with differentials it can be done yourself, its not nearly as difficult as everybody makes it out to be. Do plenty of research before you jump into it and take your time
