So I finally took my girl in to have the pinion nut recall taken care of and wouldn't ya know it, they're keeping it so they can rebuild the whole differential. Should I be scared? Ha

They are doing it under warranty, so if they mess it up they can do it again. Sounds like a great opportunity to get 4.10s and a LSD if you don't already have them. Did you remove the tune???

No I didn't remove the tune. The truck isn't under factory warranty but I do have an aftermarket warranty through the lender. I told them about the tune. Besides, even so, they're doing it under the recall which means it doesn't have to be under warranty to have this done. I wonder what the cost diff would be for bigger gears? We'll its a 4x4 so I'd have to cover the front plus installation and upgraded gears. All I'd save is the cost of the back set if gears.

The repair procedure for the first batch that were recalled is being released. Owners of the 2009-2010's built during the time frame listed will be getting a notice soon (week of June 24th) to schedule the recall to be performed. If the pinion nut is not loose a retainer will be installed. If the pinion nut is loose the axle assembly will be re-conditioned. See below.

Safety Recall M34 / NHTSA 12V-474
Rear Axle Pinion Nut
2009 - 2010 (DS) RAM Truck (1500 series)
(ND) Dodge Dakota[/B]
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 9.25 rear axle (sales code DRB) built from July 01, 2009 through November 30, 2009 (MDH 070106 through 113023).
The rear axle pinion nut on about 48,000 of the above vehicles may have been built without an adhesive patch on the pinion nut threads. The lack of this adhesive patch could allow the rear axle pinion nut to loosen and/or the rear driveshaft to separate from the rear axle. A loose pinion nut could cause the rear axle to seize and a separated driveshaft could cause a loss of motive power. Either situation could cause a crash without warning.
The rear axle pinion nut must be checked for looseness. Rear axles found with a loose pinion nut and/or a seized up axle assembly must be reconditioned. Axles found with a pinion nut that has not loosened will have a pinion nut retainer installed.

Vehicles found to have a loose pinion nut will be getting the following re-conditioning package if the ring and pinion shows any flaw.


Each package contains the following components:

1 Nut, Pinion
1 Sleeve, Crush
1 Bearing, Pinion Front
1 Bearing, Pinion Rear
2 Bearing, Differential Side
12 Bolts, Ring Gear

If the original ring and pinion is being used the following package will be used for replacement.

CBAKM348AA Seal, Pinion
CBAKM349AA Nut, Pinion
03507678 Sleeve, Crush
05072498AA Bearing, Pinion Front (bearing and cup)
05017438AA Bearing, Pinion Rear (bearing and cup)
05072506AA Bearings, Differential Carrier Side (contains two bearings and two cups)

Got her back last Friday and I can tell a little difference but I'm staying out of it until it's properly broken in. Maybe 1000 miles or so.
