Yeah I get mine done at the dealership but he can't get there. He can only get it done on a Sunday and a Jiffy Lube type place is the only thing open. Heck when he bought his truck the dealer unlocked the doors at 8:00PM on a Saturday night for him to sign the papers and take the truck. I don't envy him at all and hope he can get a new job closer to home soon

I ditched my KO2s early last year and went to Toyo Open Country A/T II. Currently have over 50k on mine and my tire shop says they should be good for another 20k easy. I take it your son does a lot of highway miles too.

If there is a discount tire around, get the next set there. Boom rotations for the life of the tire.

It depends on a lot of factors. My 275 60 20 KO2s lasted well over 70k miles and I rotated them probably 4 times tops. I bought 285 65 20s about 6 months ago and with the price tag on those I rotate them every oil change.

Props to your son for all the hard work. Pittsburgh makes a 4 ton jack that usually goes on sale for $120 around the holidays if you are looking for ideas for christmas. [emoji2]

Good luck with the new tires.

He does alot of highway miles but when he was in North Dakota they had a site at each end of the pipeline (they were running it under a river) and it was over an hour drive from one end to the other and he had to make that trip a few times a day 6 days a week. Many of their sites have multiple 'bases' so he has to keep going back and forth all day.

And yeah he has a good jack that will work but can't rotate them out on the road in a parking lot.

I guess as a safety guy he has to obey all the site rules, one of which is probably no working on personal vehicles, but guys work on their trucks on site a fair bit out there. Not like they're going to tow it into town or drop it off and get a ride back and then another ride to pick it up every time it needs something that they can do there fairly easily.

Well he just called me. He took 2 vacation days (today and tomorrow) to get his annual safety and emissions inspections. He had an appt at one place and they said they can't do his emissions because of his 9000lb registration? He tried another place and they can't do it either as they don't have the right equipment. I'm not sure I got the story straight cause he is in a jam now but he is trying dealerships to see if they can get him in today or tomorrow. My understanding is they told him if it was registered over 9001lbs they could just put a new emissions sticker on it because it isn't required but since it is registered at 9000lbs then it has to have the full test done? Ours are both registered PA class 3 so I thought that was 10,000lbs? But my registration card also says 9000. I don't need emissions because of where I live so have never had to have it done so I'm not familiar with it.

I told him worst case he could take my truck back to work with him next week and I will keep his and get this done.

He just called 2 local dealers. One was a Ram dealer and one a Chevy dealer and neither one of those do the emissions? WTF! How do they sell new cars with an emissions sticker?

So called about 7 or 8 places and none can do the emissions he needs. Apparently cars and light trucks have 1 way of testing then trucks over 9001lbs are exempt but HD trucks under 9001lbs need the tailpipe sniffer test which nobody has the equipment to do it. lol. He had been thinking of trading it for a Cummins so he thinks he is just going to drive it with no inspection until he gets time to trade it in. And because the emissions is tied into the safety inspection nobody will do the safety inspection either so it is a messed up system.

He needs to make you co-owner of the truck and use your address to register it so he doesn't have to jump through those hoops again.......

After calling about 25 places he got it done. The new car dealerships can't do them either. We called 3 of them. The place he went to said they have one of the only machines around and the local Ford dealer sends all of their gas F250's to him to do, even the brand new ones. From what they said this is supposed to be the last year for this type of testing on these trucks. The guy told him the best bet is to reduce the registered weight down so you can get the regular emissions test that the cars and light trucks get but then he won't be legal to tow his camper.

Wasn't you. It was @ScLeCo talking about my sons 'character' or whatever you want to call it.

But yeah, that is his regular schedule. He would work less if he could. The worst part is he is salary so no OT for all those hours but he gets a healthy per diem. And he has a good floor jack but that doesn't do him any good when he is 4 hours from home and even if he had it with him he has nowhere to use it. His camper and truck are packed full when he travels so not much room for anything else. When he went to North Dakota he had to haul a few computers, monitors, and big flat screen TV from the office, on top of all of his own stuff. Heck, he got the K02's while in North Dakota and only had 12000 miles on his factory Firestones but didn't have anywhere to put them so left them at the tire shop. His truck and camper are packed when he goes to a new site. Believe me, Jiffy Lube isn't his first choice and he hates it but he doesn't have time to go anywhere else. He works on the gas pipeline so has to travel to where the sites are. He will probably be heading to Baytown, TX in a few weeks and be there about 6 months. And with his job it is hard to schedule anything. He is a safety coordinator and gets a call any time there is a work related injury or failed drug test. And if there is any safety incident he has to transport the person involved to go take a drug test. He has the freedom to leave the sites throughout the day but has to be available at all times. He did have a company truck and that was convenient as they had a shop onsite that took care of everything but he wasn't allowed to tow with a company truck so when they told him he had to go to North Dakota he only had 1 week to find a truck and buy it. It certainly isn't ideal but until he can get something closer to home it's what he has. Other jobs he has found are similar and will require travel too so no point in leaving for another one. He just got married last year and is trying to get stuff paid off before he leaves this job. When he got his marriage license he had to fly home on a Friday morning then fly back out Sunday morning. He has a house and wife back here and we all want him back here as soon as possible but there isn't anything here for him job wise. He has a B.S. degree in Safety Management but only about 2 years of experience now. It took him a year to find this job after he graduated.

Anyway, yeah the point of this post was that he got quite a few miles out of his K02's.
Baytown TX isn’t a place I’m used to seeing being mentioned anywhere by anyone not from here, lol. I was born and raised here, been here 39 of my 40 years. If there’s any help he needs while he’s here (finding stuff, whatever) let me know.

As for tires, I have 45k miles on my Nitto Ridge Grapplers and they still have plenty of life left in them. I didn’t rotate them until around 40k miles, and only did because they were making noise. The lugs on the front were uneven. Since rotating them about 5k miles ago, they’ve evened out and quieted back down.

I'll probably get slammed for this but for the rotation and oil changes check walmart. They will use any oil they sell so as long as the sell the oil he needs they will be able to change it for him. They should also be able to do the rotation and I think they are open on Sundays.

If you already checked them and they aren't open on Sundays, sorry I was working from old memory if they work on Sundays.

I cringe at the thought of an oil change at a Jiffy Lube. Don't do my own anymore but a good reputable mom and pop is always the better choice.

Yep, at any Discount Tire shop in the country. I used to work those kind of hours. Over a hundred hours most weeks when I was young. I drove a Rambler Classic and I bought used tires from the gas station that was closest to wherever I had a flat. By that standard your son is doing well. When someone is a good worker these days they tend to be overworked because so many people don't know what work is. Congrats on raising a good son.

Unfortunately this is the life of a working man...... when you’re making enough money to live a good comfortable life you don’t have the time to actually live the life you’ve built. Then the next thing you know you’re 40 years old with a wife going through a midlife crisis because you’re never home so she’s sleeping with the neighbor that’s on disability

By all means. Buy your tires at Discount. Get a reservation and you're outta there in a half hour rotated and re-balanced. if you didn't they'll sell you their certs and nothing to worry about for years.

He has been at this job about 2 years and is hoping to get out next year some time. Him and his wife both have ridiculous student loan payments. I know he pays about $800/month just for his. Hers aren't quite that high but still not cheap. Their plan is to get some stuff paid off. Their wedding was about $20k last October and they have already paid it off and the wedding bands, etc. They furnished their whole house and that is all paid for. He knows when he leaves that job he will lose about $50k/year unless he gets a director level job.

Don't know if he has checked with Wal Mart. The local Jiffy Lube did his tire rotations but I guess the one where he is now won't do it. He got new tires the other day but they aren't on yet. He will be leaving either next week or the following week for Baytown, TX. Looks like I will be taking some PTO and driving down with him then flying back. It's about 1350 miles and his company will probably give him 2 days to get there. When he went to North Dakota it was 1500 miles and he had to be there for work Wednesday morning and would only pay him for driving for Monday and Tuesday so he drove about 12 hours a day. I figured I can drive some so we can be sure to get there on time. We will be towing his camper too.

When he went to North Dakota they made him work all day Saturday then go back and hook up his camper and drive 300 miles back home, spend Sunday packing everything up to leave Monday morning to be there Wednesday morning. Kind of unrealistic but that's how it is. Hopefully they give him Saturday off to have extra time to get ready but not likely.
