If different size and weight tires are just an illusion, why do drag racers try to get the lightest, smallest tire available? Because it’s not an “illusion”, bigger tires rob more power

Just going from stock 17’s to stock 20’s “robbed” power from my pentastar. Once I had the dealer flash it the power was back and the truck drove like it always did.

just do it! i had 35s and 17" beadlocks on my wrangler with a 3.6, it wasn't fast but it got the job done. it'll be fine i think. you bought a 3.6, you're not trying to get between stop lights fast anyway. i had no problems keeping my jeep in 6th gear (granted its a totally different vehicle...)

just get a tuner for it, im sure one exists.

I have a pedal commander on mine too. I was told that it helps take away the feeling of power loss with larger tires. I imagine it will help.

i have 33x12.5 a/t's on my pentastar... i had 33x12.5 mud tires previously.. yes it got a bit sluggish.. i added the pedal commander and the sluggishness left.. i did loose about 4-5 on the mpg scale.. i hated mudtires, so i went to a/t's instead.. got back around 3-4 mpg and she feels even stronger now... i woudnt recommend 35's, but im sure if you dont mind the mpg loss and the limited off the line power.. then go for it. i mean like others have said, we have the 6.. so its not like we are looking for 1/4 mile speeds lol

I’m going 33x12.5 as soon as I have the coin to do it. My truck will look pretty close to yours. I just picked up a set of paint matched 2500 flares for $100 too.

How does the truck act on the highway with those tires? Does it get into 8th? In and out a lot?

I'm running 325 60 20 on factory wheels 1½ offset spacer in front no major loss of power and it shifts just like normal , 3.21 gears they rub on the plastic wish I had 35 12.5 20 they don't rub always have 1000+ lbs in it . Discovered that it's cheaper to buy a rear diff complete with housing and a front then it is to have it regeared9cb922ef0a5861cd27645b8341786be3.jpgc661a91ed7fd11377dee0f3d5c7ced56.jpg

None taken. Everyone has their opinions, mine just happens to be factual. It is an illusion, their is no actual power loss. The truck still makes 295 Horsepower whether you have 100 pound tires, or 300 pound tires. The rotational force used to move them does nothing more than lower your gear ration. Realistically, not even by that much.

I thought Pentastar made 305 hp. Less in Jeeps and sedans I believe

That's possible, I was quoting what the pentastar usually makes across most of it's uses, i do believe the Ram gets a bump up though.

This is a little bit of an older thread, but I wanted to put some input into this. I am running 275/60r20's on my truck. Works out to be 33" by 11.8" on my 2016 Ram 1500 v6. I haven't really noticed any power loss what so ever. I am getting about 1.5 mpg less but I also have a 2" level in the front. The truck had the stock 17" on it before and besides the back wheels not breaking free as often (they still do when I gun it) it still feels pretty powerful for being a V6.

Sounds just like my experience.

Damn, I want more gear with my 3.21/3.6 with stock sized 265/70/17 ATs. Couldn’t imagine a bigger tire on it, as 8th gear sees minimal use as is.
