Shift knob

Maybe with the future shift knob it could be resessed into the panel. I think bmw and jaguar do this. Basically you push in the shift knob to make it pop up to then turn it. Once you have it in the gear you want ,you push it in again to make it flush with the dashboard panel.

I just bought my wife a Lincoln MKZ and this has to be the best way to shift gears.

You're right. But I don't want to have to look down and examine all the knobs and find the right size with the markings that indicate its the shifter. The column shifter is real easy to find, its the foot long lever sticking out of the steering column.

I prefer a column shifter but it isn't that big of a deal either way.

I think the knob is cheaper to manufacture and repair. Everything is electronic these days so that opens up interface design but I'm getting old and like my equipment old-school.
