Shifting Issue

I have a 2002 dodge ram 2500 24v cummins 4x4 with an automatic transmission. The problem I am having is that sometimes, not all the time, my truck will stall when shifting into drive. Then the other times, more often than not, I will shift it into drive, and it will just jolt the truck, but stay running. It doesn't die when going into reverse either. And it helps to put it into neutral first, then shift into drive. What should I be looking for?
