Years ago I used some Slick 50 in my car and trucks. It really worked well. I could tell that the rpm was faster when the starter was cranking the engine at start up. The running temp also came down just a tad (I'm not sure why it did that, though??? You'd think the thermostat would control that.) Anyways, that stuff is no gimmick. It did make a difference - at least for a while.

I haven't used it in years because I've been poor and just scraping by - using the cheapest oil and filter I can find. My cars are all super old and on their last legs anyways.

But, I have a new truck on order and am considering using Slick 50 again. I know things have changed now that we have synthetic oils and there must be a dozen or more products like Slick 50 on the market.

Does anyone still use Slick 50 or something similar?

Everyone's got different opinions on oil so these threads can take on a mind of their own. Here's my 2 cents;

The manufacturer recommends no additives just routine oil changes with motor oil that meets their specification.

I don't personally include any additives except when I expect there is a specific problem that can be addressed by that specific additive. Same reason I don't drink nyquil when I'm feeling healthy and I don't put itch cream on a headache.

If I have an old neglected vehicle and the oil on the dipstick looks nasty, or it has some specific problems that can arise from contaminants in the engine (sticky valve lifters/rollers, leaky valve guide seals, obstructed oil passages, etc) then I might run a cleaning additive in there like MMO to help mobilize that junk but once the problem's been addressed I don't see much value in putting additives in a healthy engine.

Everyone else will probably have their own routine. I think everyone can agree nobody's ever replaced an engine because the oil was too clean

I remember how good Slick 50 was until they started pulling valve covers and finding thick gunk piled up inside.

I haven't heard about Slick50 for probably 20 years. I didn't even know it was still around lol.

My opinion is, if the truck is new then run the oil that the manufacturer recommends and nothing else. Change your oil on the recommended schedule and sooner if you beat on it. I wouldn't worry about any additives so save your money if you're poor

Why is L U B E ****out. Now its a dirty word?

heh, machines are only as good as their programmers. I briefly lived in a town called Atwater and it always got censored because of an anatomical reference in it, a lot of plumbing terms involve a word that can be an anatomical reference, sometimes off road tire conversations get censored because "tread:blocks" contains "ad:block" which (minus the punctuation) is an advertisement blocking extension for web browsers which would negate some of the revenue stream that supports these forums..

People are imperfect but machines are imperfect faster. :D

There is no need to use ANY additives, oil or fuel. They are a waste of $$.
People who use them use them because they BELIEVE they work.

Used STP or Slick 50 when rebuilding Detroit Diesels back when. Coated the main bearings, sleeve o rings and blower drive gears when assembling. Nary an issue.

Since they put additives in from the manufacturer then why do it again if they're already in there? o_O

There are a variety of reasons. For oil, if you have a Ford 7.3 or 6.0 you add the appropriate additive to cure and prevent stiction. If you have a Ram 3.0 you add the appropriate additive to hopefully prevent bearing failure.

For fuel, you add additives to improve poor fuel. If you have a CP4 pump, you add additives to improve lubricity. If you are maintenance oriented you add additives to keep the fuel system clean. Many add additive to improve MPGs.

Look at the manufacturers advertising, they give a lot of reasons to use their products.
