I have a 2000 dodge ram sport with the 5.9, i got in it one day and my speedometer wasn't working and also it was shifting weird ( had to let off the gas to let it shift for first couple gears) The check engine light came on so i got the codes read and it said Vehicle Speed Sensor Not Detected. So i bought a new sensor and put it in. That night the problem was fixed and it was shifting better then it has the whole time i've had the truck. Next day it was back to the same problem. My thought then was that it was the wiring harness for the sensor. All arrows were pointing to that being the solution. Installed the wiring harness and no results. Any thoughts?

Ok, I have replaced many sensors and every one that was not an OEM failed in a very short time. I have never had good luck with "parts house" sensors and I find the OEM sensors to be superior in every way to after market brands. I now only buy OEM, it's a little more out of the wallet, but I've never had an issue after replacing after market with OEM.

Sorry to hear that, did codes come back? I hope someone else will chime in with more info, I don't condone buying part after part to fix the problem. Also, I'm not sure about your year model, but I've heard that the wheel speed sensor on top of the rear diff can cause these problems.

So update. We ended up adjusting the throttle cable at the back of the engine and it completely cured the shifting problem. Took it for a test drive and check engine light came back on. So I will get the codes read today and see what it says but still no speedometer and it's probably a different issue but sometimes at stop lights and such the rpm's will drop and act like it's going to stall for just a split second then fixes itself. There was only 1 time that it actually stalled when I was slowing down to turn. Started back up fine and went no problem

Problem is solved. It was the wheel speed sensor on the rear diff. :)
