(edit: realized belatedly that I posted in the wrong area. Apologies!)

Hey all, I'm preparing for a cam replacement in my 2012 5.7 1500 (due to ticking/failing lifter) and figure while I'm in there I might as well do the 6.4 swap. I just wanted to get some input on wether the HD (truck) 6.4 cam or SRT cam is a better choice? I've read that the HD cam is going to yield better low end torque, which seems appropriate, but the dyno results ive seen for the SRT cam show low rpm improvement over the stock 5.7 as well. And it seems like most folks go for the SRT cam... So I'm a bit flummoxed on which would be a better real world choice.

This is a daily driven truck. I'd love for it to eventually be my hot rod toy but it's really not that. It sees a fair amount of low speed off road use and light throttle around town driving. And occasional hauling/towing. I may eventually toss some shorty headers on it, but aside from that and a tune it's likely to stay completely stock. It has the 3.55 gears (I'd love to swap to 3.92), but it's not in the budget as long as my wee one is in daycare!)

Hope that's enough info. All opinions welcome!

Thanks all

Have you compared the cam specs? Without seeing the specs, I'd say if you tow somewhat heavy on the regular then go with the truck cam; if you don't then go with the SRT cam. Both cams are MDS compatible (the SRT auto cam is) and are designed to work with an active intake (which you have).

Thank you. I dug out the specs for both cams but honestly im counting the time since my last custom engine build in decades at this point and have forgotten the finer points of cam analysis and selection. Ill post them up as soon as I can dig them out again though. Maybe a local pro would like to decipher the differences...

Ok, sorry for the delay, here are the specs that Google and I managed to find on the various cams

Stock 5.7 eagle (no idea if this is the car or truck cam
Intake: lift .499, dur. 186
Exhaust: lift .493, dur. 208
LSA 115
103 ICL

6.4 Apache HD
Intake: lift .574, dur 215
Exhaust: lift 541, dur 221
LSA 121 (? Not sure this is correct)
108 ICL

6.4 Apache SRT
Intake: lift .571, dur 286
Exhaust: Lift .551, dur 288
LSA 114

Just looking at the duration specs, the HD cam is clearly biased towards lower rpms as expected, but the LSA# has me scratching my head a little. It's been years for me but isn't the wider LSA going to shift the effective rpm range back up a bit....

Thanks everyone.
