I would highly recommend, unless you or a friend have a good deal of knowledge of differentials, to take it to a shop and let them do it. I'll do just about anything to my truck. The buck stops at transmission and differentials. Lol

called a local repair shop today, wanted a hundred bucks to install 4.56 gears and install kit

That is very cheap for install. If it is a shop you trust, then I would jump on that. Most shops charge $200-$300 per axle.

I would jump on that good deal. I paid about 200 and it was my friend who had to grind on the housing some to squeeze in my 4.56 and powertrax.

$100 for install means he doesn't know what he is getting into, I'd stay away. There is such a thing as too cheap and sometimes you have to read between the lines.

the guy told me $100 and i was going to have to supply the parts. going to be a 2.5-3 hour job. im not taking the guys side, just repeating what he told me on the phone. said he knew he was going to have to pull the axles and he might have to do some grinding to get the gears to fit. i assume he knows something but maybe im wrong...

My installer told me the front is easy just a little cramped. The rear was tough due to no room with the ring gear being so thick.

i was kinda shocked when he told me $100. i thought it was going to be more than that. especially having to install new bearings and races along with the new ring and pinion.

Actually from an install standpoint it is much easier to have kit because then they can be less careful with old crap knowing it will not be reused. You are doing it the right way good to hear.

Reviving an old thread. Just got my F/R 4.56s and TruTrac LSD, gear kits and Mag-Hytec rear diff cover plate ordered from Matt at Moe’s. Getting my truck lifted (Zone 4 in + UCA) and 35 in Nitto TG either this week or next. Then it’s goin to a diff specialist here in Austin for the gear swap, etc. I will post before and after RPMS, etc. I am going from 3.55s on 305/50/20. Hemifever is reworking my tune for me. Goin to be a new truck.
