Hello everyone,

I have a 2022 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie (white with black trim) that I purchased used, and I have a question regarding the rear sliding window assembly.

The rear power sliding window has a glossy black piece above the slider and another glossy black piece below the slider. These pieces have a very high-polish finish and blend in visually with the rear glass. However, after inspecting them closely, I believe the upper and lower sections may actually be plastic trim rather than glass. The glass on either side of the slider appears to be in excellent condition with no defects.

The reason I ask is that the upper and lower sections have noticeable light etching, swirl marks, and micro-scratches, almost as if someone cleaned them with a dirty rag or an abrasive pad at some point. There are no deep scratches that can be felt with a fingernail—just fine surface marring that becomes visible in certain lighting conditions.

My questions are:

  1. Are the glossy black sections above and below the rear power slider actually plastic, or are they glass?
  2. Has anyone experienced similar etching or micro-scratching in these areas?
  3. What products or procedures have you successfully used to restore the finish?
  4. Has anyone had success using products such as Meguiar’s PlastX, Ultimate Polish, or any other polishing compounds on these surfaces?

I would appreciate any advice, recommendations, or firsthand experiences from other Ram owners before I start polishing the area.

Thank you in advance for your help.

That version will usually get much better technical responses because it’s clear, specific, and easy for other Ram owners to understand.

I think both those pieces are plastic. I messed up the lower one on my 21 trying to remove paint over spray from a bed liner touch up.
I couldn’t get the marks out of mine and whatever I cleaned it with ( can’t remember now) it caused it to go whiteish.
How about getting some high gloss black vinyl and ‘wrapping’ them? Can’t be too much to buy a piece I would hope. Get back the gloss? This is my 25 and they are really shiny!

But you are correct, any aggressive polishing or even rubbing seems to mar the finish. Like the new style side pillar covers.

Yes, they are plastic. I've seen them warp from sun reflection when someone installed a polished aluminum bed mounted tool box. They scratch very easily. You might be able to buff them out with polishing compound or headlight polishing kit, but I've never tried. Wrapping them with ppf or a vinyl overlay would help protect them.

They are replaceable if yours are damaged.
