Hey guys, I have an engine noise that only happens on the deacceleration slow speeds between 25 and 5 mph.
It sounds like Cards in the bicycle spokes. Is anybody else had this happen? It’s been doing it since I bought the truck with about 100,000 miles on it. I used to do it once a month now it’s just about every time I slow down. I currently have 150,000 miles on the truck.
It doesn’t sound like it’s internal. It sounds more like an external pump like a smog pump or something like that.
Thanks in advance for the help!
-Rick

And where does this noise sound like it is emanating from?

From under the hood, left side, right side, front or rear?

Happens in forward and reverse gears?

More info required.

My psychic baseball cap is at the dry cleaners.

So sorry, I attached 2 videos with sound recordings of the weird noise.
Do you see those?

I had this happen to mine just as you described it. Sounded like a flutter from shuffling a deck of cards. Was driving me nuts for almost a month. It can be a few things like an issue with the cam phaser for the MDS or something with Timing Chain Slack, Tensioners or Guides or Oil Quality/Level.

1. Low Engine Oil - mine was almost 3/4 of a quart low. Topping it off made the noise happen less frequently but still happened.

2. Change the Oil - luckily, this completely solved my issue and I have been good for 2 months now. I only had 4000k since the last oil change. I asked for Mobil One Pure Synthetic versus the generic full synthetic from Take 5 Oil Change.

I think maybe the last oil change from Take 5 might have given me a bad batch… not sure. But I have been watching things closely because I was really worried it was a bad cam phaser or timing chain related issue with 198,000 miles on the motor. Since I’m the second owner at 120,000 miles, don’t know if the timing chain was ever changed. Good luck!

Check the flex plate through inspection window. That's going to be it 99%.

On deceleration that is when it bends the most = flex..

It's a cheap part, not super easy but doable, you need to fix it. On decel maybe less urgent then acceleration chirp, but you should fix it. I wouldn't accept any huge price for this item. Under a grand or close, if someone says the need to drop the trans I'm not sure that is correct, I think you just need to move it, but I'm not 100 on that maybe one of these guys know the process. If you do indeed need to fully drop transmission, make darn sure you add a new rear main seal, every single time this is dropped. I once got a trans rebuild azhole didn't replace rear main and that new tranny leaked til I sold it. Again, if trans needs dropping, replace all related seals should be no extra labor and well under 100 bucks, and think about replacing torque converter. Why not the trans is open at that point. What trans you have 8 speed or RFE? If 8 speed I defer to these guys, I know nada on that.
