T-case engaging, but no power to front wheels...

thank you! i will order the usb to OBD2 for my laptop, and hopefully buy the AlphaOBD when i get a chance, hopefully within a week i can buy the transfer case. i don't know exactly when i will do the swap, but it will probably be late spring/ early summer

However, much of the 2013+ how-to applies to the 2012 as well, such as the transfer case programming.

Can you detail where and how you found the 44-40/44-45 with Alfa, because when I go into the 2012 tipm/body computer, the options are all for the 243, 246, etc.

So I guess I'm a little confused, when it's in 4wd lock, it doesn't actually lock everything in? I understand auto having the clutches, and only engaging when the tires spin, but 4lock, at least in my mind, should lock it all up, Right?

Simplified, there is no mechanical lock without the clutch. It either activates the clutches as needed (auto) or it keeps the clutches engaged all the time (lock). There is no clutch-less mechanical lock available. GMC auto transfer cases work the same, at least in 1/2 tons. Ford, at least in the Raptor and Tremor, is the only one that has a clutch system for auto but mechanically locks as well. Note GMCs in hard use have overheating issues because of this, even the ZR2.

I went to car configuration change, tcase type, and then it was there in the list. Since I'm using an android (vs. windows), I wonder if that is why they are showing different?

I have both the Windows and Android versions. In both, it shows the same 243, 246, etc.

Your connecting to the same 2006-2012 non-powernet TIPM CGW, like the highlighted selection on my first image above, post "22? Not under MY2013, or something else?

The reason I ask, is that the bottom drop-down, at the very bottom, (select control unit), has an option for "body computer too".

Yea, that's very interesting.

It could also be that I don't have a 2012 to actually connect to.

The options might change when actually connected, rather than just browsing options without a connection.

I can't say if physically connecting to a specific truck makes any difference but, I have found on several occasions that the options change with the year of truck I have selected on the start tab.

I'll look to see if I can see all the options emjohn4 posted above, next time I have the PC on, with the same truck year selected.

When I select MY2006-2012 on the start page of AlfaOBD, I have 5 more options under tcase type.
Also, on mine, it shows all numeric designations, no BWxx-xx.

That's the same thing I have.

He's on 2.4.10, while we are on the current version, 2.5.5.0, so that could very well be the reason too.

But, i think the 246 is pretty much the same case as the 44-44, and the 243 is the same as the 44-45, so those two options should (maybe) work for the 44-44 and 44-45.

I see parts houses listing them this way all the time.

I had the same thought but after reviewing the changelog data for 2.4.1.0 for android and 2.5.5.0 for windoze, they both have a last update as 11/2024.

Both versions appear to be the most current for the respective platforms.


This could be another AlfaOBD mystery.

Not to throw another wrench in the OPs decision, but I've read that the 44-44 actually has several more robust internal components than the 44-45. I seem to remember the input shaft being one of them.

Its not even the clutches in the 44-44 that are bad, its Ram's terrible programming that only engages the clutches when theres rear wheel spin. They do this so people can't destroy their front ends driving around in 4Lock on dry pavement. But it also makes stock 44-44 equipped trucks completely nerfed for 4wd.

I can tell you from personal experience, @Brandon-w 's switch is the real deal. It makes the 44-44 lock HARD like any other part time 4wd tcase. You will destroy your front axle/cv joints if you drive around on dry pavement with his switch engaged like any other part time 4wd tcase.

I glanced through the thread a few times and apologize if I missed it. When you say the transfer case engages 4wd but not power to the front wheels....what exactly do you mean? If you have it in 4wd and jack the front tires off the ground, can you spin both front wheels at the same time and the front driveshaft does not move? If the front driveshaft is "locked in" to the t-case it doesn't sound like it's a t-case issue, but would suspect the FAD or something else in the front axle isn't engaging. Are you sure the front axle is engaging?
