So, there are over 90 replies to this thread, and I’m lazy, and I’m not reading them lol so here’s my take.

for the vast majority of people, the PW is overkill. It can tow and haul less than some 1500’s, it’s enormous, it gets horrendous fuel economy, and it’s on an aging platform. It’s the same thing as people getting a Wrangler Rubicon and never taking it offroad. You’re literally paying thousands of dollars for equipment that you’re NEVER using. Thousands can be saved by getting a 1500, or even a different HD (with WAY more on-road capability) and throwing some off-road tires on it. It’s just way too much for the average person’s needs.

with that said, I didn’t need one, either. I was getting a divorce, and my wife and I used to take our kids to the beach and drive on the beach using her KL Cherokee. I didn’t want to lose my ability to do that, and even though it was AWD, my charger never would survive the beach. Since I didn’t have anyone to ask permission for things anymore, I started building a 1500 Sport because I hate chrome. Then I thought, just for giggles, I’d price out a PW (being the sales manager of the dealership comes in really handy here!). I found that I could afford a PW, and the rest is history. I had intentions of doing MILD off-roading, and thought that with the lockers, sway bar disconnect, and other PW exclusive features, it already comes from the factory with how I’d build a truck, so I wouldn’t need to do much to it. I was even hesitant to put 35’s on it (I eventually did)!

Fast forward 30 months. I have a full Thuren lift with King 2.5’s, 37’s, and enough armor to conquer the zombie apocalypse. I have rock crawled in places I had no business being, shocked an endless amount of people with my truck’s capabilities, had an engine replaced, a new bed side welded on, and met people I never would have if I hadn’t joined the sport of recreational off-roading. It sounds corny, but my truck literally changed my life. I have people in it I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t buy it. My trip to Moab this year was an indescribable experience I’ll never forget. Search some of my posts for some off-the wall pictures of some things I’ve done, especially in my TOTM thread.

So in short, you probably don’t need a PW. I definitely didn’t, just needing a truck to drive on the beach with. But it was a life-changing decision to get into the sport of off-roading, which I literally had no intentions of ever doing, and maybe it will be for you too.

Not wanting to mod my wagon was me to a "T" I was gonna just do 35s and that was it. Oh how wrong i was and how far down the rabbit hole i fell.

Its a great experience getting out on the trails with these trucks especially with other power wagons. Its definitely a community, honestly I think that's the best part about these trucks is getting out and making memories whether it be exploring with family/friends or meeting new like minded enthusiasts.

@IRSmart hit the nail on the head when He said a power wagon is overkill for the vast majority even for those who buy them. They are definitely a purpose driven truck and that purpose is definitely going where most full-size trucks wont go. If you have those thoughts in mind i would definitely say go for it, if not a rebel or normal 2500 may suit your needs just fine.

If you can afford it, do what you want. However, there are plenty of power wagons bought that never see a non-asphalt road. That brings a tear tome eye.
Just like a Rubicon that doesn't get dirty.

Why buy used when a new PW can be had for less? I paid $47k last December for my new, $60k MSRP PW. I could actually trade it in right now for what I paid almost a year ago. These trucks have a lot of profit / room to negotiate. Year end deals can be readily had.

Covid killed a lot of the great sales. No doubt trucks bought in late 2019 and the first part of 2020 were bought cheaper than they are now.

Yeah, I get that. My buddy was on his way back from the beach and couldn't get anyone to tow it because of the camper.
FWIW, Power Wagon don't care! Drug that thing down the highway like a Sunday drive.

Huge expense for a daily driver. Money better spent getting a 2500 decked out like you want vs the upcharge for a PW. Unless you plan on taking your $60,000.00 daily driver out on the Weekends and try to destroy it on rock climbing, save the $$$.

My wife and I are Landscape and Nature Photographers. Just bought our second PW. We have a 30 foot Camper that we pull, it's 6800 pounds dry. The PW pulls it easily. Once we arrive at a location we setup the camper, disconnect te PW and are ready for ANYTHING the area throws at us as we go out and shoot our pics. I highly recommend it

One caveat that doesn't apply to most on this forum but caught me by surprise were tolls. Living in a major city surrounded by toll roads, bridges and tunnels I was initially denied resident discounts for my truck due to it being 500lbs over what they accepted as being a non commercial vehicle. After two years of writing letters and making phone calls I finally connected with a sympatheic person with some common sense that granted me a waiver for my ezpass (electronic tag). Prior to that my toll costs were higher than my fuel costs per week and Power Wagons are thirsty!
The truck is a little bigger, a little thirstier , maybe a little more expensive (depending on your state/city) to register and may fall into a different toll category but I don't regret for a minute making the purchase. You will also be part of an exclusive club; I've yet to see another PW locally since my purchase but pass 6-12 Raptors a day :)

dude, elections have consequences.

I don't wanna get all political in this forum but dammit if that's what it is all about. Normal, everyday people, in everyday forums, using everyday products due to their everyday lifestyle, seem to bang up against some kind of limitation, restriction, caveat, fee, fine, exemption, or whatnot that is germane to the apolitical discussion at hand yet was caused by previous choices that person and others made in their elections and where to live and who to vote for.
Your local/regional policies, fees, fines, limits, exemptions, etc etc were all put in place by officials who were appointed by executive branches that you elected, and given room to create regulations and administer infrastructure by bills written by legislative branches that you elected. And those officials who crafted policy and regulation to hit you in the shin, were educated for 17 years in a system which was overseen by boards of education that you elected, who administered curriculum dictated by another committee appointed by the executive branch ding-a-ling that you elected, which for 17 years taught that person NOT that government serves the people and is the problem to most people's life, but instead that government IS the solution to most people's problems and has a duty to regulate you for your own stupid security.

The problem you face with the weight limits and fees and stuff are not because of your lifestyle choice in purchasing a PW, they are the result of your voting and allowing the education system to not teach civics. THAT got in the way of your pursuit of happiness to buy the PW, NOT you buying the PW.

2019, bought a year ago last week, loaded except for 360 degree cameras. It has 34k miles and gets just over 15 mpg (but who cares anyway).
Get one.

I have got to get off my ass and remove the bed decals. Silver is one of the few colors that the decals look bad on. Silver looks so much better without them..

yea the bed decals are aggressive on silver and white, I could argue for or against keeping them honestly. I like the truck both ways.

Subtle but strong, or loud and proud.

I actually think they look good on White. I just do not like how they look on Silver. I keep thinking I will get used to them but truck is coming up on 3 months and still not liking them.

Very off road capable, deliberate off road capable. Doubt there is anything out there from the factory that can compare, but as a DD it might suck. Mileage is not great, but as long as you don't mind filling up once or twice a week with mid-grade fuel.
