I got a quote from a local driveline repair place in town. to swap my 3.73's out for 4.10's was just over $2000. am i crazy or is that WAY to pricy.

That sounds about right for me, for quality work. If you're paying that much you should probably go up to 4:56...I would/will.

If that's for front and rear, that sounds pretty cheap to me, assuming they are quality parts.

I jut wasnt expecting it to be so high but i had know Idea. he would use OEM gears.

you mean price wise? I'm not for sure, but I would think they'd be pretty close in price, close enough to make it worth while. I'm pretty sure there is no OEM MOPAR ring and pinion set in that ratio though so you'll have to go aftermarket...but that is certainly not a bad thing.

sorry. I meant is there a 4.30's gear option, or does it jump from 4.10 to 4.56?

Agreed, but you should just jump to 4.56s if you're doing it.

He is coming from 3.73. If he is not towing allot and often. 4.30 may be about perfect in my opinion.

Crazy when it's a 125 dollar option from the dealer

Parts are expensive and it's a big job. I would be more worried about getting someone who really knows what they are doing, over saving a few hundred bucks.

I do tow ( close to max periodically) but not for long distances and not up any sort of grades.

I was in a bind and had to get rid of a leased truck so I had to get something off the lot ASAP. 4.10 trucks ( that i wanted) were nowhere to be found when i was looking. It also just happened to be a time of the month to get excellent discounts on trucks. way more than $2000.

They're definitely sparse. I ordered mine because no one had what I wanted

That's a tough choice then. You would hate to spend that kind of money and wish you had gone 4.56.
On the other hand if you drive empty often.....

If you're paying anyway...

If I was PAYING $$$ to convert, I would go 4.56 without question. Here's the logic:

The 66RFE transmission gear ratios are the same as the 68RFE. 6th gear is very tall and designed for the Cummins. It's @ .625 OD!

To make a robust 6.4L Transmission, it was a good decision for FCA to just take the same basic 68RFE transmission guts (with a slightly ligher duty torque converter) and put it in a 545RFE case (for easy mating / packaging to the gas engines) and call it the 66RFE.

Here are the ratios:

But 6th gear is really designed for a low rpm / torque monster. The 6.4L HEMI, as great as it is, likes to rev. Even with the 4.56, I don't believe 6th gear will rev too high with this much OD in 6th @ .625:1

I have the 4.10 and I would even like a little higher ratio rear end. I would not bother going any less than the 4.56 if I were spending the money.

Just something to think about...

4.56s will also help keep it in MDS for a longer period so I dont believe the highway MPG will be greatly effected.

The base should have been 4.10 with 4.56/4.88 as option.

I agree. The 3.72 is the downfall of my truck. I will do this eventually but with a $2000 + bill i am going to have to hold off untill next year atleast. Kitchen remodeling is becomming a big bill.
