Well by pressing tow/haul the first time that already limits the transmission to 5th gear even though it will show 6th gear as an option. The only thing pressing the +- sellector will do is keep the truck from turning on MDS while in tow/haul. But mine has never gone into MDS in tow/haul.
I do like seeing which gear the truck is in though.

How do you see current gear? When I click in to 6th to disable MDS it always shows 6, not the actual gear I’m in. How do you see current gear?

Mine shows what gear I'm currently in right next to what top gear I've limited the transmission to with the +- selector.

you are absolutely right about the buttons. I just want to drive it and not fool with it though. towing/hauling? sure, hit the button! I get the reasoning for it. That trans holds gears at way too low of an rpm for my taste so I do wind up putting in manual mode (added bonus of disabing MDS).

If you have a 3500 with the 6.4 and 66RFE and you hit the T/H button it automatically disengages MDS. 2500’s need the addition of you putting the gear selector in 5th.

3500’s can also disengage MDS by putting the gear selector in 6th even when not in T/H mode.

When I used manual shift MDS never came on. I always shifted into 6th.

Doing either tow/haul or manually selecting 6th disables MDS on my 2500.

Based on the number of posts in this thread it's obvious that a lot of people stand behind the 6.4 gasser as opposed to the diesel. I personally prefer a gas truck for many reasons, but I'm just curious what factors made everyone go that route as opposed to going with the diesel?

My decision was based on the almost 9k option price of the diesel, added maintenance, DEF!, and difference in price of fuel. I honestly looked at it from a dollars and cents perspective. In 4 years I have towed 8800# with another 1200 in the bed over 45,000 miles. My overall mileage is right at 9.3 mpg over all types of terrain.(hand calculated) The newer gas engines can go over 200k miles with normal maintenance. Now if I was pulling heavier loads it would be a whole other decision.

My decision came from my experience working on them at the dealership, to many potential issues and expense in repairs once it is out of warranty.
My travel trailer only weighs around 7500lbs, if I towed 10klbs+ on a regular basis I may have went Diesel.
I came from a 2003 Diesel and it was a great truck, I was really worried I would regret getting rid of it but so far have 0 regrets.
I always tell people, unless you really need the Diesel, go with the 6.4.

BIL works at a dealer, who sees a lot of the diesel trucks in for service that are not used for their intended purposes, hauling heavy on a regular basis, so based on my needs of only towing our TT 3 to 4 times a year, I was either buying a new 1/2 ton to replace my old one, or a new 3/4 ton w/6.4....went with the 3/4 ton!
When I bought my 3/4 ton, the 6.4 on lots around here were far and few between, all dealers suggested they only usually had the Cummins as that was the popular choice for most.....3 years later, that trend has changed a fair amount, so as you say, the 6.4 has become a truck that more & more are standing behind, and for good reason, it really does fill a huge gap for many that only the v10 once did, sort of.....

Same. I had a top dollar amount I was willing to spend, and it came down to a Laramie 6.4 with 4.10s, heated/cooled seats, heated steering, remote start, defroster, 8.4, etc or a Tradesman with the Cummins and 900lbs lower payload. Frankly, the stuff on the Laramie package benefits me every time I’m behind the wheel where the Cummins would only be when I’m towing over a pass. I haven’t had any need for more power. I’m always able to hold the speed limit or the max speed I’m willing to drive. The mileage is only 1.5-2 mpg lower than my brother’s Cummins during similar situations.

Simple economic decision. Tow 8200lb goose neck trailer. Diesel fuel is 20-40 cents more than 89 gas. Ca diesel requirements i.e. def BS. $9000 option. 2018 2500 6.4 tows with power to spare and no high cost maintenance. Did I want a diesel, hell yes. Did I need a diesel, no.

This was my exact reasoning. Yes, I now have a heavy 5th wheel, but, the 5 or 6 times a year I tow don't out weigh all of the comforts of the Laramie during my daily commute. I'll probably re-gear eventually to handle the extra weight and be perfectly content!

My work just got a 3/4 ton CC long bed 6.4 that exclusively hauls 8,000 lbs minimum. Regularly 10,000-12,000. Truck dose well. No diesel needed.

The 6.4 has plenty of power. We just have to worry about cam failures. But all trucks, engines and transmission have their specific problems. Nothing is exempt from major issues.

I got the 6.4 because I liked that it can do it all . It can accelerate pretty quickly and can tow just about anything. Plus, if you add headers, exhaust and a tune it would be the perfect truck. So far I love my 2018 2500.
