MADDOG,

This is a pretty old thread but my Ram was built in 10/14. The tag doesn't have the date in October though. The noise comes and goes. Usually at start up but then goes away. I'm curious now if I should have the dealer run the diagnostic test. What do you think?

That's how mine started. I'd get it tested. PM me if you want a copy of the bulletin. Include your email address in the PM.

First of all would like to thank MADDOG and everyone that contributed to this thread. I just found it this past Friday. My truck is a 2014 built in July of 2014 in Mexico. It has DJ in the VIN and the ESA and ESB sales codes. I have been complaining to my dealer about a really loud clatter when I first start the truck in the mornings. All they tell me is that its normal. Problem is it does not do it all the time. Also has a deep engine knock until warm and I do notice this on most morning starts. Sometimes is louder than at other times. I did call Ram customer care on Friday they gave me a case # and turned it over to case management. My truck is at the dealer right now for this and another recall and I am hoping that they do the engine diagnostics in the morning. I requested to be there when the diagnostics are being performed. But the service writer said, well they really do not know what time it will be done. I am just going to show up in the morning and see what is going on. I am really scared that the dealer will tell me that nothing is wrong and leave me with a truck that I will not trust.

Keep following up with customer care. I've seen cases where the dealer would not remediate but was overridden by corporate. Just be polite and plead your case, they have a lot of ability to make things happen. Good luck!

Please do explain.
I had a 2008 1500 5.7 that had broken manifold bolts causing exhaust leaks.
Now I have a 2014 2500 6.4.
What's up?

It's not the same as these poor guys having to get the whole engine replaced. The exhuast manifold bolts come over torqued from ram. The heat expansion and cooling causes some to fail prematurely. When it does you get an exhaust manifold leak. It gets much worse over time. It's air escaping causing a ticking noise. Mainly on cold starts. After about 20 seconds the heat expansion causes it to go away. You can hear it under mild throttle too. I haven't heard any long term effects from this. But is very obnoxious.

Just to update. I picked my truck up yesterday afternoon from the dealer, it had been their since Monday. Dealer claims they could not hear any clattering or knocking. Service writer said that they were not telling me that there is not a problem, but they just did not hear anything at this time. Is true that the loud clatter on start up comes and goes, but the internal knock I hear is their most mornings. I will be back in contact with customer care. I might also request a meeting with a local factory Rep. I know what I am hearing is not normal, plus the truck is using oil, about a quart very 4000 miles. That is not normal either.
certainly not acceptable in my mind.

Just so you know, industry standards for oil usage are actually pretty high. It's something along a quart every 1000 miles is acceptable. I'm not saying I agree with it, just letting you know. It is normal for a new engine to use a little bit of oil when brand new.

+1

I agree, unless it is burning more than a quart every 1K, they are not going to do anything. I use a one quart every 5K and is just something I monitor and fill as needed.

If you can, I'd leave the truck with the for a few days and ask them to try a cold start up each day. Also, they should be prepared to to follow the test criteria outlined in the bulletin each time they start it.

it's the oil - it's thin. if you want to know what oil burning is, buy a VW turbo DI Diesel. they use 0W30. you'll be lucky if you're having 1 quart on 1000 miles. And the special oil they use is 3x as expensive too. Therefore they tell you. that you can go up to 35000 miles between oil changes. yeah- if you fill a quart up every 1000k, there is not much time for the oil to get old...

If my oil level wasn't moving over the course of 5-6 thousand miles I would be getting an oil analysis to make sure my oil wasn't being diluted.

I might agree it there was a drop in coolant or other fluid...The "industry standard" with new engine oil consumption is complete BS It should be called "we don't want to build your new engine right" Pistons not honed correctly and rings never seating properly is pretty much the issue but the "industry standard" allows for it. I have never had a "using oil" issue on any of my vehicles that didn't have an underlying issue that caused it. (High mileage rings, gaskets etc. or wasn't built right in the first place)

When you do you just have to accept it or rebuild it. I have a 97 ram that hasn't used a drop in 110,000 miles either. (i measure when draining) When it begins to use oil, I will know that the wear is on the downside and eventually it will need some attention.
