I might agree it there was a drop in coolant or other fluid...

Even if your coolant level isnt dropping, oil could be diluted with fuel.

The ecoboost is prone to dilution in this way and Ford changed required oil from 5w-20 to 5w-30.

I'm not saying this is happening to your truck, but I've never had a vehicle not "use a single drop". Most wouldnt lose more than 1/4 of a quart between oil changes. The biggest oil users I've had were the Ford modular 4.6/5.4.

Yes, yes they were. My dad has a 5.4 that has used one quart of oil every thousand miles since it was under warranty and it is closing in on 200k now.

I had two Fords with 6.9 Diesels. One used a quart every 400 miles like clockwork, and the other would go maybe 700 miles. Ford said "normal". I fought with them for almost 2 years and they shortblocked the 400 miler. BTW, they dismissed UOA reports as "meaningless".

Yeah I am not sure how close the dealership followed the service bulletin. My service writer said they started the truck several times over the course of the 3 days that they had it. I never have gotten the warm and fussys from the dealership that I bought the truck from. Customer care called me yesterday and said that the service manager would never call them back. They said that if I wanted to use a different dealership that would be okay which is probably what I am going to do. A little soggy here in Houston today.

I took my truck to the dealer 5/10 after the first dealer I took it to confirmed the knocking and that it met all the criteria of the service bulletin, but didn't have the capacity to put an engine in the truck and recommended I take it to a more mainstream dealership that handles commercial trucks as well. They called on 5/11 and said they had filed the paperwork with Chrysler and expected to hear something about a shipment by the end of the week and have an engine there sometime the first part of this week... Well today is Friday, and they call again saying Chrysler just now finally approved the claim and the shipment of a new engine to them, so he is hoping the engine will be in around the middle of next week now, which would mean I should have my truck back around the first part of the week after next... :flame::Violin:

The dealership has been very good about everything and I can't blame them for this (They call me every couple of days to tell me what is happening with the process), but Chrysler is dropping the ball in my opinion. The dealership offered me a loaner car, but they are only Dodge Darts, and this is my farm truck. I declined it thinking I would have my truck back by this coming Monday or Tuesday, and I was afraid I would owe Chrysler a new Dodge Dart after using it to farm with for 2 weeks. Has anyone had Chrysler extend any kind of gratitude for selling you a truck that ended up being out of commission for 3+ weeks with less than 11,000 miles on it and a year and a half old because they had some crap wrist pins from some supplier (probably in China)? I was alright with a week and a half to even 2 weeks to get things fixed, but come on, 3 weeks to replace an engine that they know has bad parts in it?! Just wondering what your experiences have been like? It seems like most people get their warranty claim approved right away and then they are on the road about 2 weeks after taking the truck in at most.

Man I know the feeling! When I had my engine swapped, my loaner was a Fiat e500! I asked the dealer to upgrade me to a mid-size and they loaned me a Chrysler 200C at no extra cost! 3+ weeks is a long time! My swap took no longer than 3 days!

Good luck with everything. It sounds like you have a good dealership that takes care of you.

Yeah, I'm driving my VW Jetta right now, and bumming Dad's truck when I need one. I would think the Chrysler would keep some commercial loaners in their loaner fleet for people that need a truck during the day for work. I should just ask them to put a hitch on a Dodge Dart and see how many hay wagons it will pull before something becomes detached :flipthebird: lol! But the dealership is doing a great job taking care of me and has done everything in their power, it's above them that things have been screwed up...

That's a pretty standard situation. Replacing the engine only takes a couple days, it's all the admin work and waiting for parts that takes forever.

We've replaced one 6.4 for the knock and was around 3 weeks from the time of the first appointment till the customer had his truck back. You have to remember the 6.4 HD is a brand new engine, there is always teething problems with new technology.

It's just the way it goes, sometimes waiting for warranty to approve everything takes longer than usual. Then it depends how close the dealer is to a parts distribution centre. Once the engine finally arrives it could be another couple days before it gets into the shop depending on the workload.

It sucks to have a brand new truck in the shop, but life sucks. Luckily situations like that aren't common. Just have to look on the plus side, warranty hasn't always been as accommodating as it is today. 15 years ago a manufacture likely would have ignored a lot of the issues that get fixed today with recalls, and warranty.

As far as extra compensation, you'll have to talk to your dealer. They may give you some free oil changes or something. Just don't go in there kicking puppies demanding this and that, usually doesn't work out well.

Yes, part of that might be true, but 15 years ago, a truck didn't cost almost $50k either... which equates to a good amount of income for the average vehicle owner. I use this truck to help run a business, so a loaner would have helped me keep things going a little better. Right now I cannot haul any hay that we sell because that is the only truck I have that is setup to haul. If it meant I was not able to haul my boat to the lake for a weekend, that's one thing. But when I am not able to realize some income because of a manufacturing defect that they take over a week to approve paperwork on repairing, that's a whole different scenario. My biggest question is why doesn't Ram keep a warranty loaner fleet of trucks. I'm fine with a single cab work truck for a few weeks, but I'm not fine with being stuck with my hands tied behind my back because of corporate dragging their feet. I think the dealership has done an outstanding job and told the service rep today I had so problems whatsoever with how they have handled the case, I was just disappointed in how Chrysler has really dropped the ball. Warranty is there to repair things that shouldn't happen, so when they do, they should be hustling to get the vehicle back to operating condition ASAP. I would understand if I drove in with a Cummins blown to pieces and signs of a tuner being on the engine, but when there is a bulletin that pins this engine to needing to be replaced due to improper wrist pins installed, where is there any need to investigate? I had the Chrysler rep on the online chat pull up the engine build date way before I took it the dealership in less than 30 minutes. I had my first and so far only oil change done at a Chrysler dealership, so it is on record as having proper maintenance. The tech replicated the noise and recorded exactly as Chrysler instructed, so I'm failing to see why Chrysler needed 10 days to say, "hey, this truck has a bad engine." It seems pretty black and white to me?? And the dealership never heard anything back from Chrysler until today, even after contacting them about the ticket every day to see how it was progressing.

Nothing costs the same as it did 15 years ago, that's not really important.

I understand what your saying, you need your truck to make a living, and I feel for ya there. It's a ****** situation. I'm not saying the long admin time is ok or I agree with it, I'm just letting you know that's an average time span.

As for a fleet of rental trucks, I have no answer for you there. Anytime we get a loaner for a customer it's usually a rental and if a truck is available, they get a truck. That also comes down to your warranty coverage. Some cover rentals and some don't.

I feel for ya man, I do. Just trying to let you know how things usually go.

I know, I didn't mean to come off heated towards you, I apologize about that... I talked with Chrysler and they said their loaner fleet only consists of residential use vehicles, i.e. cars. I knew buying a first year engine might have a couple of kinks to work out, but everything I read, the engine was based on a proven platform (5.7L) with some modifications, and the most worrisome part of the engine (the MDS system) has never given the slightest hiccup, but one of the most fundamental parts has lol. But like you said, some things in life just suck, and then there are your Ford-driving friends who like to make said things really suck! :console: I'm glad I have a great support network here for information. The dealer service rep actually thanked me for doing my research and bringing a printed copy of the service bulletin to him (Thank you Michael!) stating it saved them time.

It may have not saved a LOT of time but it got the ball rolling, Hurst.

You are welcome by the way and good luck with the replacement.

They had my truck almost a month. Sure it sucked, and the Jeep they gave me really sucked compared to the HEMI vehicles I own and drive, but it had to happen for me to get a new engine.

My 2016 has the clatter as well, going in on Monday for the second time for diagnosis. Not happy, should have bought a 6.7

I'm not convinced the date range or the VIN range is super accurate so it could happen, smurf.

I know of two local '15 owners that ended up getting new engines for the same problem.

So it's worth getting the diagnostics done, IMHO.

Yeah, that's ******. My '15 just rolled 12000km and not a hint of noise so I'd say I'm clear thankfully.

Update on my '14. About a week after getting it back, I had a check engine light come on. Scanned it and got code P0507, which is excessive idle speed, idle air control circuit. It was right in the middle of me getting up a bunch of hay, so it had to wait. Over that time, the light went off about 4 or 5 days later, then about 4 or 5 days after that, it came back on when I started it up hot on a hot day. Did the same thing, went off, then came back on a 3rd time another week later or so. Finally had time to take it to the dealer on Wednesday and they ran diagnostics that pointed to a bad PCM, so ordered one of those and got it installed the next morning when it arrived. They call me yesterday afternoon and the tech is now working back and forth with Chysler's support team who had him taking apart the intake yesterday afternoon looking for signs of a rolled or bad gasket... I'm waiting for their phone call today to see what they say. I'm about at wit's ends with this truck... Less than 12k miles and less than 1k on a new engine and it still can't run worth a dime. My first Ram is starting to look like my last one. Dad had even liked it so much when I got it that he was considering trading in his F150 in another year or two as it nears 100k for a 1500 Ram, but needless to say, his opinion has changed with how many times he has picked me up and dropped me off at the dealer for repairs for this truck. I really hope someone at Chrysler in the truck division is monitoring this thread because it sounds like they are having a tough time getting these trucks off the line without a rather high failure rate.
