In the process of doing the cooling system service and due to our current supply chain "quality" wondered what experiences others have had with thermostats and radiator caps
TIA

If both the original thermostat and cap are working and holding pressure, don't swap them out for new ones,as your originals will probably work better and outlast a new thermostat and cap

valid point, however the cap has failed the pressure test and the temp gauge runs just a bit below center which makes me suspect it may be running cooler than it should or someone swapped the stat.
I have seen a lot of postings in which people are putting lower temp stats in and I'm not sure why as the cars are "Tweaked" to run best at the OEM temps which I believe is 203 degrees
Any input appreciated

First upgrade in the Mopar power parts bin is a 180 t-stat,they run the 203 for emissions, not power. They also go into closed loop mode at roughly 160F,not 203 as you're thinking

Didn't the Hemi come with 195* thermostats up until 2006 or so? Then it was changed to help meet emission standards.

I do know if you want a 192 t-stat at your local Napa/Autozone etc.you have to tell them it's for an 04 or 05 Hemi,if you tell them it's for say a 2013,they'll tell you they don't have one,lol

Just a bit below center is 100% normal that is where it should be.

You should be able to see the actual temp on the Evicc. When you're monitoring temps /oil pressures etc.,it's usually better to use the Evicc display then the dummy temp or oil pressure gauges

When you say the mopar power parts bin is that a site/publication ??? I ask as I've heard both hot and colder are good depending on the circumstances/ application. this late model stuff is new to me :(

Back when they had power kits for the 5.7's,if your pockets were deep enough you could go all the way up to ported heads. As long as the kits were installed by a dealer, you're factory warrenty stayed in place. They've dropped the 5.7 kits, but they still offer kits to take your stock Hellcat Red Eye up to 885 horses and the first upgrade is a 180 t-stat.Pretty well every tuner that's any good is gonna have you swap to a 180 thermostat.

In order to upgrade to the Scat Pack Stage 2 performance kit, you had to equip your car with the Stage 1 kit. The two kits together could add an additional 30 horsepower to the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. The Scat Pack Stage 2 performance kit, included the following…

  • Mopar Performance Camshaft Kit
    • Camshaft
    • Tiebars
    • Heavy Duty Pushrods
    • Gaskets
  • Stage 2 Performance PCM
  • (2) Scat Pack Stage 2 Badges

Now by adding the Scat Pack Stage 3 performance kit with the other two kits, this is where you would achieve your 58 horsepower and 47 lb.-ft of additional 5.7-liter HEMI power. The Scat Pack Stage 3 kit included the following…

  • Mopar Performance CNC Ported Cylinder Heads
  • Mopar Hi-Flow Headers
  • Mopar Hi-Flow Catalysts
  • Stage 3 Performance PCM
  • (2) Scat Pack Stage 3 Badges
The overall package was very neat idea at the time. Dodge and Chrysler both showcased the performance packages on many of their concept cars, such as the…

MP015_012DGrj3e2r89n9mil6hgbv33eh3bbj.jpgMopar ’15 Performance Kit for 2015 Dodge Charger R/T. (Mopar).
Mopar did offer the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit as part of it’s Mopar ’15 Performance Package for the 2015 Dodge Charger R/T. Only 50 of these kits were produced for the year, making it one of the rarest of the Mopar edition cars to date.

Scat Pack Stage Performance Kit Cost (all prices are in U.S.):

  • Scat Pack Stage 1 – $2,195
  • Scat Pack Stage 2 – $1,895
  • Scat Pack Stage 3 – $4,995
That is a total of $9,085 before taxes. If you add that to the price of an entry-level 2015 Dodge Charger R/T for $33,595 for a total of $42,680. That’s a lot more money than the new (at the time) $39,995 price on a 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack with 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft of torque compared to the R/T Stage 3 power rating of 428 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft of torque.

So what happened to the performance kits? Well, the performance kits were short-lived, considering that the cost of the kits and the introduction of the R/T Scat Pack models for the 2015 model year pretty much put them to the wayside. But the performance kits are still available through Mopar.com and various other Mopar Performance Parts dealers, for 2013 to present Charger and Challenger R/T models.

Wouldn't this require other operating parameters to be changed in the Alfa area to prevent other issues? likely many I'm not even aware of ? I'm in no way questioning your knowledge just don't want to create a can of worms. My previous experiences have taught me one change typically leads to another. My area of expertise is with the pre 1980 vehicles but I am smart enough to proceed with caution with the newer cars.
I'm at the point in life that I just want a reliable cruiser with good power whit appears to have. Some tweaking on the cylinder deactivation, shifting etc may come at a later time but right now it's more that I'm trying make sure the maintenance is up to date and fixing the god awful 1 candle power headlights LOL
i do appreciate all the help i've gotten here

The above post was referring to just changing to a 180 t/Sat not the scat 1,2 3 packages ;)
You can still reap the benefits of a 180 or 192 t-stat on an untuned truck as long as you leave the mechanical fan in place. Give it a whirl, you're probably due for new antifreeze anyways. If it doesn't pan out,all you're out is the cost of the thermostat,as you can always reinstall your factory T-stat.

My initial drive with the 203 thermostat has me thinking i maybe should have gone with a 195 or so. BUT I haven't had a chance to really see how it will do in 90-100 degree temps with the A/C on etc.
Any comments/ experiences ? :rolleyes::happy160:

If you're buying a 192 at your local Nappa / AutoZone / Bumper to Bumper etc. tell them it's for a 2004 Hemi truck,if you tell them it's for your 14 they'll tell you they don't have one

I installed a Gates 190 degree couple years ago in my 2016. Runs low 190’s in summer and high 180’s in winter. Also deleted the shutters. No issues. IMG_2694.jpeg
