Get the 8spd, end of story.

If you really want to waste time and read threads, start with google.

I use it like a truck and I drive it pretty hard. Moderate off road, mud/snow and the transmission is great and has had 0 issues. Only 37000 though, but I cant imagine many 8 speed trucks built after 2013 have a huge amount of miles yet.

There is group of about 18 EcoDiesels all have probably drove past 200K all carrying significant loads that have had no issues with the trans. There are many more that just about or over 100K, some of which deliver travel trailers with none of them reporting issues either. Many people buying the EcoDiesels are driving up to and over 20K a year.

This eight speed trans is pretty well bullet proof, also helps when it the same trans has been used by BMW for a few years already in the X5.

The 8 speed is the ONLY reason I even considered buying another Ram. I had an 04 hemi & the 545 trans was such a piece of junk that I went to GM for a while. So far I'm liking the 8 speed. I drive my vehicles hard so we will see how it holds up

8 speed for sure! Traded my '12 for the '14 I currently own after barely 10 months of ownership.........liked the 8 speed that much. The lower first gear and close spacing make it great for offroad IMO, no bogging between shifts!

Good info. Not surprised at all though. It is a great box. Its awesome on my 392 Charger too. These must be plenty durable for the HP/torque in the Dodge's. Not to mention they have been being used in BMW's with V12's and Aston Martin's with huge amounts of power.

8 speed, period.
Traded my '11 for an '14 with 8 speed. 60000k on I think and purred like a kitten. Also have the 8 speed in my wife's Charger with over 110000 k on, no problem there ever.

The ones Ram/Dodge uses is good for about 520 ft lbs(8HP70) to upwards of 700 ft lbs(8HP90).

8 Speed a huge reason for my choice. 3.92 gears and towing is a breeze. Compared to other brands, it shines. Call the hemi low tech if you like, but 395 hp and an 8 speed, nothing else in a 1/2 ton gets close.

I have the 8 speed with the 3:92 LSD in my 2014 4x4. I was a little hesitant because there wasn't much feedback on the new 8 speed but after doing a little research I bought it and I'm glad I did. It works perfect for me and tows my boat and other toys with ease. It did take me a while to get used to the Rotary Shifter but I actually like it now too.

I used to have a 2010 Dodge Dakota with the 545RFE transmission. I wanted to make the jump back into a Ram, and when I heard the 8-speed offered in 2013+ models wasn't made by Chrysler, I did my research. Nothing made by humans will ever be 100% reliable, but the ZF 8-speed was well known on other manufacturers (Aston Martin, BMW, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc.) before being put into the Ram and other FCA products. The V8/diesel version seems to be quite a bit more reliable than the 545RFE and 65RFE transmissions.

The V6 version is a different transmission model, designed by ZF but built by Chrysler/FCA. Its reliability isn't quite as good, although I still wouldn't knock it that much.
