So in the early stages now of looking into crew cab 4x4 2500 Cummins to tow a new trailer we are looking into getting. Has anyone purchased one recently? Any tips or suggestions, or maybe what you paid and where if you bought somewhere in California? Thanks guys!

Where in CA are you from. I'm in SoCal and bought at Dennis Dillon in Caldwell, ID. There are a handful in CA that have bought from them. You won't find a better deal in CA than from DD.

How much trailer are you towing? Depending on how much trailer you have and you are a "by the books" guy you may want to keep an open mind to a 3500 Diesel.

I second the 6.4 consideration and the Dennis Dillon recommendation. The 6.4 does a decent job depending on your trailer size, of course at a lower cost of ownership.

I got a 16 tradesman 6.7 4x4 for 39,000........ That's what the truck cost before taxes and the negative equity from my trade which put me at 51 out the door.

Yep, the 6.4 is a nice setup if it meets your needs for the trailer. Of course, there is the endless gas vs. diesel debate but most folks can somewhat agree around 10,000# is the time to start considering the diesel. That being said, I'm hauling a 11,000# 5th wheel with the less capable rear end ratio (3.73) and it generally does fine. Also worth noting I live out west and regularly have to tackle hills.

Also, X2 on the Dennis Dillon recommendation. Even if just for comparison with your dealer and to use as leverage. When you look at their site don't fall for the "as low as price". That requires you to belong to a bunch of associations that you don't. The "sale price" is still very good.

I bought a 2016 Cummins and love it. I have always been an advocate of having more towing capacity than you need. It's awful when what you tow manhandles your truck. I tested the 6.4 also, but really didn't like it. Just seemed to strain too much compared to the Cummins. The 6.4 would probably be a better package if it came with the 8 speed though.

A 6.4 w/ an 8 speed is about the only thing that would get me thinking about a trade any time in the next 10 years or so ... unless I end up sitting on so much money I don't have to try to justify the increased purchase price and maintenance costs of a Cummins to myself lol. I don't need one but I love they way the drive and sound.

Thanks for all the replies guys. We're looking at trailers in the 11,000 lbs range so it would be really close from 1500 to 2500. Will definitely be checking into all these suggestions!
