Anytime you buy gas in New Jersey the "fueling technician" will not put the cap on tight and you will have to clear the code. Every time. I learned to tighten it myself. An entire state that can't pump their own gas.

This is how ignorant I am. The check engine light came on for the first time at 119,000 miles on my 2018 Ram crewcab Tradesman with the Pentastar. I went to a nearby O'Reilly and they ran the code machine and came up with P0456, "minor evaporative leak" -- likely the gas cap, which i promptly reefed down as best I could. The light stayed on so I took it to a trusted auto shop and they ran the reset process and cleared the code. I asked if gas cap gaskets tend to fail and the tech looked at mine and said, yup, hard as a rock and he advised -- though he said it pained him -- to go to the dealer and order an OEM cap, as the aftermarket caps often have problems of their own. So I walk into our dealer's parts department and tell them what I need and they ask, is it a Dodge or a Ram. Huh? Then they had to 'splain to this pilgrim that Dodge and Ram are separate entities, and that a Dodge gas cap might not fit a Ram. News to me. So I go get the VIN number, noticing that my "Dodge" truck says RAM 1500 right there on the front of the truck. Another Duh moment. How could I have missed this for the last seven years? So yes, it is a Ram, and we order the Ram OEM gas cap. The kicker? The cap for a Dodge was $6.05. The Ram cap was $46.87.
I knew that Jersey won't let you pump your own, and been that way for a long time, but why?Anytime you buy gas in New Jersey the "fueling technician" will not put the cap on tight and you will have to clear the code. Mike, I think that got changed recently,The counties in Oregon with more than 40k residents don't allow you to pump your own gas either.
Yes the law has been changed whats was really stupid I could under the old law at truck stops I pumped my own diesel but not allowed to do the same for gasMike, I think that got changed recently,
Oregon's pump gas law (HB 2426, signed in August 2023) ended the decades-long ban on self-service,
Rural vs. Non-Rural Counties: In the 20 most rural counties, stations can be fully self-service; in larger counties, up to 50% of pumps can be self-service, but attendants must staff at least half, notes Oregon State Fire Marshal and Duane Morris Government Strategies.
Pricing: The price for gas must be the same whether you pump it yourself or an attendant does, according to OregonLive.com and Statesman Journal.
Attendant Availability: Full-service options must remain available for those who need or prefer assistance, ensuring compliance with accessibility laws (ADA).
I lived there for 5 years, it was an interesting rationale

If you have visited NJ you have probably realized that our IQ in the State is extremely low so State is is keeping us safe.I knew that Jersey won't let you pump your own, and been that way for a long time, but why?

Can say however it can be really nice when the temps are in the teens and winds are whipping or 90's and instant sweat. My wife was originally from Ohio and always hated pumping gas so she loves it.

Are you actually implying the pump jockeys have a higher IQ than the average resident. ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAIf you have visited NJ you have probably realized that our IQ in the State is extremely low so State is is keeping us safe.

It appears that must be the case since the law has remained the same. Locally I purchase my fuel from WAWA so I imagine being a up and coming convenience store powerhouse they only hire the bestAre you actually implying the pump jockeys have a higher IQ than the average resident. ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Been / worked there and the pump jockeys are NOT the crem' de la crem'..... Even if they DO speak English.

Just weld a trap door to the outer body panel! And to top it off, my 5th gen doesn't even require a gas cap .
Speaking of which, are the any caps out there that would fit? I'd still rather have one.
