Anytime you buy gas in New Jersey the "fueling technician" will not put the cap on tight and you will have to clear the code. Every time. I learned to tighten it myself. An entire state that can't pump their own gas.

This is how ignorant I am. The check engine light came on for the first time at 119,000 miles on my 2018 Ram crewcab Tradesman with the Pentastar. I went to a nearby O'Reilly and they ran the code machine and came up with P0456, "minor evaporative leak" -- likely the gas cap, which i promptly reefed down as best I could. The light stayed on so I took it to a trusted auto shop and they ran the reset process and cleared the code. I asked if gas cap gaskets tend to fail and the tech looked at mine and said, yup, hard as a rock and he advised -- though he said it pained him -- to go to the dealer and order an OEM cap, as the aftermarket caps often have problems of their own. So I walk into our dealer's parts department and tell them what I need and they ask, is it a Dodge or a Ram. Huh? Then they had to 'splain to this pilgrim that Dodge and Ram are separate entities, and that a Dodge gas cap might not fit a Ram. News to me. So I go get the VIN number, noticing that my "Dodge" truck says RAM 1500 right there on the front of the truck. Another Duh moment. How could I have missed this for the last seven years? So yes, it is a Ram, and we order the Ram OEM gas cap. The kicker? The cap for a Dodge was $6.05. The Ram cap was $46.87.

I *think* 2012 was the last year "Dodge" appeared anywhere in the Ram trucks, and that was just in a little place in the dash. Parts books didn't always make the leap, though. Good on the auto parts guy for not screwing you.

I knew that Jersey won't let you pump your own, and been that way for a long time, but why?

The counties in Oregon with more than 40k residents don't allow you to pump your own gas either.

Mike, I think that got changed recently,

Oregon's pump gas law (HB 2426, signed in August 2023) ended the decades-long ban on self-service,

Rural vs. Non-Rural Counties: In the 20 most rural counties, stations can be fully self-service; in larger counties, up to 50% of pumps can be self-service, but attendants must staff at least half, notes Oregon State Fire Marshal and Duane Morris Government Strategies.

Pricing: The price for gas must be the same whether you pump it yourself or an attendant does, according to OregonLive.com and Statesman Journal.

Attendant Availability: Full-service options must remain available for those who need or prefer assistance, ensuring compliance with accessibility laws (ADA).

I lived there for 5 years, it was an interesting rationale

Appreciate the update. I haven’t been to Oregon since about 2005, but heard that in 2015 was when they changed the law for some counties. I just remember at one gas station, sitting there while I watched a single attendant fuel cars that had gotten there after I did. I got tired of waiting so I got out and fueled my own car. The guy threatened me with a $500 fine as I was putting the nozzle back. I just shook my head and laughed as I got back in my car and drove away.

Yup, interesting place, I was on my motorcycle in 2020 and the attendant took the nozzle off the pump handed it to me, watched me fill it, then took it back, said, I don't fill motorcycles.

Jobs creation/retention law? I honestly can't think of another reason. The ADA claim seems specious, unless 49 other states aren't in compliance. I see signs in most states that say something like "honk horn for attendant if you require assistance".

If it's actually some state specific ADA-ish law requirement, will EV charging stations be required to have an attendant?

I had no idea that they had to pump gas for you.
I went to Jersey a few years back for my nieces Christening. My sister asked me to take her SUV to go pick up some food from the deli and to fill up her gas. No problem. Jump in and head to the gas station. Pull up, get out of the SUV and start pumping gas. Attendant (young kid, probably 19 or so) walks up and asks what I think I am doing. Told him pumping gas. He looked confused and said he had to pump it for me. I said "oh, didn't realize I was in the full server lane". Still confused, looks at me and says "it's all full serve here in New Jersey". I did not know that. He reaches for the nozzle and I tell "I'm done" and hand him the cash. He walks away to get my change and comes back and tells me that it is law that people aren't allowed to pump there own gas. Said it was to limit station liability, in case a customer didn't know what they were doing and caused a spill. Told him in Las Vegas there are no full service stations anymore and that all stations are self service now.

If you have visited NJ you have probably realized that our IQ in the State is extremely low so State is is keeping us safe.

Can say however it can be really nice when the temps are in the teens and winds are whipping or 90's and instant sweat. My wife was originally from Ohio and always hated pumping gas so she loves it.

If the gas stations still have the attendant clean your windshield, check the oil and check your tire pressures, when they pump the gas, then I see value. If it is just a make work project for minimum wage employment, then it is just one more government program adding costs to business to support left wing ideology.

Here, there are still a few stations that offer full service, along with self serve at the same station, but the pump jockeys just pump the gas. I prefer self serve because I never scratch the side of the vehicle with the nozzle, nor do I drip gas all down the side below the filler.

I lived in New Mexico for a few years.

NM has the combo of New Jersey and Oregon level IQs + self serve at the pumps:

And New Mexico drivers love driving side by side @ 40mph down the interstate.

And then the idiot rips the latched nozzle out of the truck, setting his girl on fire.

Hope she's ok.

Almost looks intentional. Looks like he struck the lighter right by the filler neck.

Are you actually implying the pump jockeys have a higher IQ than the average resident. ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Been / worked there and the pump jockeys are NOT the crem' de la crem'..... Even if they DO speak English.

It appears that must be the case since the law has remained the same. Locally I purchase my fuel from WAWA so I imagine being a up and coming convenience store powerhouse they only hire the best :rolleyes:

I was born in NJ, but moved at age 7. The nice people of Texas took me in and taught me how to safely operate a gas pump. In the last 55 years I have bought full service gas once (outside of New Jersey and Oregon). I was headed back to the Detroit airport in a rental car. Temp was just above zero and a hurricane style wind. The gas pumper did not look like he enjoyed the fresh air while pumping.
