I have an ‘04 3500 dually with the 5.9 Cummins. I was pulling a fifth wheel today and the engine light came on and it went into limp mode. It only lasted a few seconds and then everything was fine but like was still on. When I got gone my son read the code and it said throttle positioning sensor. Ok no problem I’ll get that fixed. My question is does that have anything to do with the cruise control only working sporadically? I had a new vacuum pump put on in March and still run into issues while pulling a trailer with the cruise on. Pulled 240 miles today and the cruise worked fine. Thursday while pulling it wouldn’t work all the time.

The cruise control systems generaly shuts down any time there's any malfunction reported by the ECM, so if the TPS isn't working that would qualify. I'd probably clean the throttle body as my first step, along with putting a scope on the TPS. If you don't have access to a scope you could always fire the parts canon, TPS sensors are usually relatively inexpensive. The one suggestion I'd make is to get an OEM one. I had several Chrysler vehicles of that era and they HATED aftermarlet sensors.
