So my truck has a tick when it's cold, but when engine warms up to normal temp it almost 100% goes away. Anyone know what this is? Louder when I step on the gas, speeds/slows with engine rpms. Kinda makes it sound like a diesel. Doesnt sound good.

So many of us use Redline 5w30 oil, it's formula leaves protection behind when most oils do not. It is a tick killer. Could just by dry starts, no oil there. Could be exhaust bolts, check them and make sure there are none loose. Listen to the truck at warm idle, if it ticks at warm idle and ends up being lifters, that is the danger. Cold tick is more of an annoyance.

Runs great. No warning lights

My oil filler cap says 5w20, should I still go 5w30? I'll check the exhaust bolts tomorrow. Yea the tick goes away at warm idle, but sometimes can barely hear it when I step on the gas when warmed up

The oil weight poll here is about 50/50 on people going thicker then 20 weight w/o issue, and you don't even have mds right? So I'd use 30 for sure if it were me.

No mds. I do have eco mode that pops up on my dash. I just bought 5-20 royal purple with the good wix filter. I'll post if it stops the tick or not. Thanks everyone

My last Ram had a 4.7 and ticked like crazy on cold start up, from day 1. I just sold it with 184,000 miles on it and it's still running like a top. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

That's crazy 5W-20 is recommended. My 4.7L Dakota ticks slightly and I run 10W-30 as it never gets that cold here in Houston. The ticking is common, unfortunately.

Yea still ticking with the royal purple 5-20w. I put a home made stethoscope on the valve covers and exhaust manifolds. The manifolds definitely had the louder ticking which seems like it's a better thing I guess, but who knows if it's just echoing in from the cylinders. Running great, guess I wont worry about it for now. Thanks everyone
