Guys I seemed to have developed a ticking notice at startup. Doesn't seem to matter if the truck is warm or cold. It's a hemi should I be concerned. Doesn't sound like an exhaust leak.

My old audi did this and it was normal. It was the cam lifters

It is normal. This is somethig these motors have been known to do since they first came out in the trucks back in 03.

So I shouldn't be concerned? Can I do something to make it stop?

Nothing to worry about. Some guys have fixed it with longer pushrods when doing cam installs, but it isnt something that is going to do damage to the motor. It is just annoying at times.

Funny, this is exactly why I logged in this morning....to post the same question! My 2012 Express Hemi started doing this recently, but only on cold startups after sitting for 8+ hours. It goes away after a couple minutes. If its "normal", then why hasn't it done it from the day I bought it? I have 10k miles on it and it started doing this maybe 1k miles ago at the most.

Just did some more reading on the Hemi ticking on google. Seems to be either valve lash (considered "normal") or exhaust leak where once it heats up after a minute or so it will swell the gasket to seal the leak and stop the ticking. I'm coming due for an oil change, so Ill have the dealer look at it then.

Go on any forum or search engine, and look up "hemi tick". You will find hundreds of threads about this dating all the way back to 2003 when these motors first came out in the trucks. It has not proven to do any harm to the motor, it is just annoying at times.

Just make sure that you are using the proper oil and the correct amount of oil, and you should be fine. I always ran Royal Purple 5w30 in my 03, and never had any ticking, but I have been at hundreds of truck GTG's at the dragstrip, dyno, car shows, parking lot GTG's, etc... and I have heard tons of trucks that all had the same ticking you guys are talking about.

Had an '05 Magnum RT with 190,000 miles on it when I got rid of it and it had the Hemi tick the whole time. Seamed to get worse as the miles added up but it ran it's a$$ off the whole time I had it from new!

I was actually wondering the same thing. I don't really hear the tick on engine start up. it becomes more noticeable as the engine gets warmer, and on the driver side. I've been doing a lot of research on this. All that I've read says that Ram Hemi's are well known to have this tick sound and that it isn't bad. But everyone says the tick goes away after it heats up. My problem is just the opposite. Don't hear it on start up, but gets more noticeable as it warms up.... any ideas? Or is it the same tick as Hemi's have? I have an 08 1500 crew cab 5.7L SLT.

I think ur ok. My 12 model ticks louder than my 07 did. It does it more when cold but still does it sometimes when warmed up. Sometimes doesnt do it at all. Weird. Ambient temp doesnt seem to make any difference to it. My 07 didnt really do it when it was warmed up. This truck has done it since brand new. I think they all have different personalities, so urs is probably fine, just different. They arent all quite the same.
