I know there are a lot of these, but I wanted to get some answers specific to my ride:

2002 1500 4x2 Reg Cab, short bed, no mods, 265/70R 17's

I will not (or at least not intentionally) be doing any off-roading. However, I do need something that is good in the snow/ice/wet conditions seeing as how I do not have 4-wheel drive. Where I live, we have a typical 3ish months of winter. Unfortunately, at this time, I cannot afford a dedicated set of winter/snow tires, so I am looking for something to get me through year-round. The truck came with American Prospector SUV's, so they need to go (not to mention the relatively bald nature). Tires I have looked at so far:

Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza
Goodyear Assurance CS TripleTred All Season

Opinions on these or suggestions of your own are much appreciated. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Don't be scared to look at Hankook... It's a Korean company that makes some great tires at a good price.

I can tell you that the Alenzas are very good in the wet and snow and a great improvement over the stock Wranglers. I had very good mileage with them on my Tahoe so hoping for the same with the Ram

Alenza is a great tire I ran them on my Durango and they were takeoffs from an Escalade. Smooth ride good traction. Not aggressive at all but a nice tire.

I don't know about Goodyear I have never had a set I liked but heard they make a couple good models.

I use Cooper Discoverer AT3s during the winter months up here in Manitoba. I find I get good to really good traction in pretty much all of the elements. I have nothing negative to say about them.

I was very happy with my Nitto TerraGrapplers last summer and fall.. I ran them on ice a bit and they weren't too bad, but we get 5-6 months of winter in Fort Mac, so we put the Cooper winters on again this year. I think if we wanted to we'd be okay with the TG's in full blown winter conditions..

I know I've said it a lot on here, but I highly recommend you stay away from BFG/Michelin products. I had some issues last spring/summer with a set of BFG ATKOs and the support I received from them was terrible. The tires ran not too bad but started falling apart around 20,000kms. Promises were not kept, and I was left holding the bag.

So I am still researching, and still can't pull the trigger on anything... that and I am waiting on my tax refund to pay for these.

I guess my biggest question/concern is what is the major difference of putting a passenger tire on vs. a light truck tire? According to TireRack, the O.E. Wranglers were passenger tires. I understand the concepts of speed/load ratings, but is there a different build quality in the P vs LT tires??

I know most reviews can be subjective and are based on individual users and their driving styles/abilities. I looked at Consumer Reports (see attached). Michelin holds 4 of the 5 top spots in the All-Season category, while Cooper Discoverer A/T3 holds the top spot in the All-Terrain category.

The question remains: most of these are available in a P and an LT, with the P typically being much cheaper. If Dodge thought it was fine to put P-rated tires on out of the factory, one would assume it would be safe to do so in post-O.E. rubbers right??

I'm running the BRIDGESTONE DUELER AT RH-S 265-70-17 on mine. Have had excellent service from them. Have roughly 35,000 on them right now and still holding up well. The perform well on all types of terrain, unless you stick your right foot through the firewall. A set of 4 are usually around $700-$800.

I like the Kelly Safari Trex that I have on my 17s. These are 285/70/17

a P is a passenger tire(usually rated for cars, suv's and trucks) a LT(light truck) you usually see on heavier duty trucks(2500s and 3500s) as well as on bigger sized tires. with your setup you will be fine running a P tire. ensure that the load rating is rated enough if you will be haulin anything though. i would suggest the cooper a/t3 or any decent all terrain tire(nitto, mickey thompson, toyo, hankook). these are just my opinions though.

Second person to suggest Cooper A/T3's, and they are actually on my short list at the moment...

Cooper A/T3
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2
Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 is what i run on my truck right now. Great traction in all conditions. I was going through 1-2 feet of hardpack snow yesterday no problem with them + on dry and wet pavement there is little road noise and traction is great.
