So this weekend I will be driving down to South Carolina (I am from North Carolina) to trade my truck for a Cummins. I've never done a title swap across state lines before, would someone be able to explain the process to me?

My truck is a 2011 Ram 1500 and I'm trading for a 2005 Dodge Cummins

Edit: this will be a 1on1 private transaction not a dealership

I would suggest you look up your local DMV website for your local laws. I know in Nevada they have downloadable bill of sales and then obviously both titles need signed by each seller. When coming from out of state Nevada requires a VIN inspection before it can be registered too. They do that at the DMV office here.

I'm in NC too and I've done this before. Make sure the title is filled out correctly by the other guy and you will be good to go. Unless something has changed recently SC titles do not need to be notarized. When you go the DMV here in NC they won't even ask about the notary because it's an out of state title.

So i won't have to register it in SC, then in NC? I can just bring the title over and register it?

A bill of sale is never a bad idea. It’s also a good idea to get a phone number and current address, just in case something comes up.

Make sure when you swap titles they are signed exactly the way they are made out. Ergo, if the printed name on the title is John R Doe, it must be signed John R Doe. Don’t forget the mileage.

Yeah phone numbers and address are not a bad idea. You never know. Another note on the title, DO NOT scratch out or draw a line through any mistakes. NC DMV are sticklers for that kind of crap. They will deny the title if it has any mistakes or corrections.

If I recall correctly, don't NC titles have to be notarized? The SC ones don't as yet - just did one a few month ago. Kinda sill IMHO, but there it is. SC also has a pre-made form for a Bill Of Sale. https://eforms.com/download/2015/12/south-carolina-vehicle-bill-of-sale-4031.pdf Couldn't hurt to have one.
Yes any NC title must have the seller's signature notarized for in-state transfers. I'm not sure if SC requires NC titles to be notarized at the time of transfer or not.

IT's usually pretty straightforward...

I bought my last 2-3 cars (but not the truck) from Washington, but I live in Oregon. Make sure the title info (seller, signature, etc) is filled out correctly, and make sure you have a bill of sale (with at least "Bill of Sale" across the top, seller's name, vehicle year/make/model description and VIN, amount sold for, seller's signature.)

Once you get it home, get the safety inspection (and pollution/smog inspection if applicable), letting them know the vehicle came from another state. After that, take it to the DMV/DOT office, and be prepared to pay any sales taxes** on top of any transfer/title/tag fees.

(Fortunately, OR has no sales tax, so it's usually dirt cheap to get an out-of-state vehicle registered here.)

** if you want to avoid paying too much in tax, have the bill of sale show an amount like $2500 or so - high enough to be believable, but low enough to save you some beaucoup cash on the tax bill.

Yeah NC caught on to that a while back. We pay taxes based on year model not purchase price anymore. It's based on a percentage of the value of the truck for that VIN. They call it a Highway Use Tax that everyone pays when registering their vehicle. Then later we get to pay the property taxes separately. Every year after that we have to pay the property taxes at the DMV when we renew our plates. We don't pay a sales tax on private sales. The inspection will have to be done but doesn't have to be done until after the DMV (within 10 days).

I know in WA state, if you trade 1:1 you wash the tax. No tax is due since it is a trade. Only way tax would be required is if you added on extra money. Same goes for trading in to a dealer, you only pay tax above what you owe on vehicle after trade in is deducted from the final amount. So if trucks 20k, and trade in is worth 10k tax is only on 10k.
