48c8e767cf03e38fd086f33e6817461b.jpg so my tranny is cracked. Its a 5 speed. Opinions on a new tranny? I was about too replace the clutch when I noticed it. Might as well get a new flyweel as well. Are there any good performance clutch's and flywheels out there for these trucks? Might as well build her tough while she's apart

I mean I run through the gears but I don't slam them or anything. I have no idea what may have happened

It kind of looks like something broke previously. a clutch explosion? I think a flywheel explosion would be more destructive unless it happened at low engine speed . What about a starter snout breakage, and getting thrown around the bellhousing and getting pinched between the flywheel and the inside of the bellhousing. Maybe a rock somehow got into the bellhousing.

Its a 2000 dodge ram 1500 5.2 l 5 speed. I had bought it about a year ago and never really had any problems with the tranny. Then about a month ago I started too notice my clutch slipping. In 4th gear I can't give hardly and throttle or the motor starts revving up really quick then the clutch catches and it jerks you for a sec. Well couple days ago me and buddy decided too put in a clutch. We start looking at all we gotta do and he spots it out and shows me. I'm clueless as of what happened.

It should be obvious if something was ricocheting around in the bellhousing, when you pull it apart. I'm curious to know what it was, let us know what you find out. pics would be cool.

Will do ! Can't pull her apart til I find a new tranny cause I'm gonna be using my buddies garage . if I buy a used tranny what are some good signs if it is worn out or not . don't wanna be a guessing game and get one and it go out in a week

really? Do you think it's really necessary? I mean, you didn't know it was cracked, before. So, maybe it'll be fine, as is. You could drill like a 1/2" hole at the ends of the crack, so the crack doesn't spread. I'm not a welder, so I don't know if the bellhousing material is amenable to welding, but maybe somebody else on the forum could jump in here. If the crack were lower on the bellhousing, there might be a structural issue. But the cracks in the picture, are on the top, which I believe is in compression(stress). In other words, the static force(gravity) is tending to close the cracks at the top of the case, whereas the bottom of the case is in tension(trying to pull apart). If the bottom area of the bell housing isn't cracked, I think you might be ok. If the truck is your primary vehicle, you could repair the clutch, and get back on the road and look for another Trans at your "leisure ".

you can try having that welded up instead of finding a new transmission or possibly just find a new bell housing. on a street vehicle that is stock there is no reason why welding would not work but then again the cracks in it seem fairly strange.

Do you think jb weld is an option? I'm also pretty sure these bell housings are also just one piece so I don't think you can replace them . now welding I've heard different opinions on. Good and bad .

no jb weld is not an option. it would need to be welded with a welder. if welded properly i don't see any issue with.

being aluminum, it could be easily welded by someone with the right equipment and skills. The real effort is going to be tearing it out/down and prepping.

I think I remember my buddy, Pat Blais, a Mopar auto Trans local guru telling me it was tough to weld cases. Now that was 30 years ago, and he was talking about Mopar auto trannies not a 5 speed manual case. I believe that he said that the (junk)alloy used in casting the trannies is not amenable to welding. But I have to defer to an accomplished welder who knows that the 5speed case can be welded.
