I recently had my truck to the dealer and he told me that the tranny on my 2017 1500 sport is sealed and does not require service, that does not sound right to me. truck has a 94k on it, do I need to service the trans? fluid flush etc?

Ram says it's lifetime fill, ZF who designed the transmission says it needs to be serviced at something like 80k kilometers.

You can decide what you want to do depending how long you want to keep the truck and how hard you work it

He's saying FCA's recommendation on trans maintenance doesn't seem to fit the norms. That's why he's asking here so he can get answers on real world conditions. Why refer him to the service manual? He already knows what it says...why have this forum? Just refer everyone to their service manual

There are lots of threads on ZF 8 HP70 transmission maintenance on this forum. If you search you will find that recommended fluid/filter change from ZF (not RAM) is 60K miles or so. I just did mine and changed to aftermarket pan/filter and Redline D6. Shifts much better now. I changed it at 66K miles.

Lots of YoutTube videos on the procedure.

Don’t recommend a flush. Solvents used at dealers/shops with systems for flushing are not compatible with ZF trans. Good luck.

Your dealer is full of ****,it's impossible to have a totally sealed transmission, the tranny would blow the seals out everytime it got warm,as fluid expands and contracts with temperature. The 8 speed is vented same as every other automatic transmission to compensate for the expansion/contraction factor the fluid experiences. The vent is on the top of the tranny and has a vent hose attached to it,that terminates roughly at the back of the engine

So if I have miles on it instead of kilometers I don't have to change it? :happy175:

Seriously it's a sales gimmick, many car reviews when looking at cost include the "cost to own" so cost is lower if you you don't have to spend money on trans maintenance. As stated above ZF does recommend changing it. Now since you're out of warranty you should take it somewhere that will use a less expensive, and just as good, ZF certified fluid, like valvoline maxlife, Redline, or Amsoil. It will save you a lot of money.

my truck is near 50k miles and am planning a change. have a PPE pan on order and a 12qt case of redline D6 in the garage waiting.
just wish it was like the old days where after draining, fill it thru the dipstick tube, run up to temp and make sure level is between the add/do not add marks on the stick.

Looking at the threads on how to replace the ZFs fluid gives me PTSD. Really makes me wish Chrysler still continued the 6 speed on newer trucks (don’t kill me, i promise i’m not a witch lol)

Do have the fluid and screen changed. Do Not have the tranny backflushed. Back flushing causes more problems than not. My local MOPAR dealer showed me an example on a Challenger, $4,000 replacement.

Mines been changed twice. Once when most of it leaked onto my garage floor and the pan had to be replaced and once when it leaked on the driveway and it had to have the valve body changed. So it can be changed. To my knowledge zf recommends 100,000kms, which rounds off to about 60k miles. The dealers call them sealed units because they can't repair them only swap out. Not a chrysler part. Dealer replaced the leaky pan, but the valve body had to be done by a zf specialist that was not a dealer employee in my case. Parts are not available to my knowledge for anything other than oil changes. You blow any internal part it's a new trans.

A little off topic but I’ve searched the forum with zero results. URO parts (APA Industries) makes an aluminum transmission pan for MB and BMW ZF eight speeds. From what I’ve read it’s a high quality replacement with a replaceable filter and metal drain plug. APA does not cross reference any parts to fit FCA vehicles but some people have found that the BMW ZF pans fit the Ram and Challenger ZF pans. Curious if this URO pan would fit our Ram ZF 8HP transmissions as they are about a hundred bucks and well built aluminum pans.

There's no such thing as lifetime, Burla.

The only thing we need to know is what the Marketing Department is calling "lifetime". Even the best synthetic tranny oils need changing. I never bothered with UOA, after seeing some others, 50k was the reasonable limit. With filters.

With trannys, it's always best to be on the low side of the avg. change interval, because once that varnishing and plating starts on the solenoid valves and orifices.............
