Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. What transfer case fluid does an 09 ram 1500 with a 4.7 take?

Also does the front diff take the same fluid as the rear?

Thanks

Depends on the transfer case you have, 44-55, or 44-44.

I don't believe the front dif takes the same fluid as the rear. Different weight. Don't have spec in front of me or I would post them.

Btw, if you look at the synthetic oil thread, some folk are discussing transfer case fluid on the most recent 3 pages.

That is copy and pasted from 2008 ram manual.

So Redline c+ is a replacement for atf-4, and is a very popular oil here from tranny and transfer case. For gears Redline gear oil or Amsoil SG are very popular here as well.

There has never been a case where additive was needed on ram forum when using redline gear fluid. You see the front is different then the back in weight.

2 more question(s) (about this at least).

1. How do you know what transfer case you have? I pulled my window sticker and all it says if shift on the fly transfer case

2. How much fluid does the transfer case hold.

So with some of the older transfer cases, you need to "crack the code". Which basically means you need to decipher what they are asking versus what fluids were in use during that time period. You might find out instead of needing atf4 that you may end up needing mercon 3 if you have a transfer case from an older era. Good that you asked the question, I would get down there and look at any markings on the case. If you find out it is a 246, then you need to figure out the fluid that meets the spec, my guess would be mercon/dexron 3 as that was in use before atf4, and that may be a hold out part. I would just go ask the dealer about the fluid, maybe they sell that mopar part number and you may be in a box on that fluid.

I can only guess, I would say it takes 2-3 qrts if it is the 246. Did you access your owners manual online?

For fluid capacity/level, add new fluid until it runs out the fill hole. Then you know you have enough.

Yeah that's how you do it, but the problem is how many do you purchase? I think it will be right at 2, but I'd buy three because having an extra one is a good idea. Redline d4 is the dexron 3 replacement if you find out that fluid is dexron 3 clone. OP let us know when you get a chance to read the transfer case and see what model you have.

Redline c+ would be the proper fluid if you wanted the ester based stuff. Depends how hard you drive and how long you want your interval to be. ATF-4 is a good product all by itself as well.

Did you give him you vin? If not I still would go under there and read the label. I couldn't find out if the other transfer case was a 1500 product, or a 2500 plus product, or even something else. Did the dealer say something that sounded like he was sure of it?
