Hello everyone,
First post here. I have a 4.7 '10 1500 quad cab SLT. Kinda a love hate deal with it. I got it last Feb. and had to pay a shop to rebuild my rear diff, also needed lower ball joints, and a tie rod end....now my transmission pan is rotting out.
I figure I'll save myself some money and replace it myself seeing how it's just bolted on. Anyway, I have a question about the filters. Would it be OK to use NAPA (I think WIX makes 'em) filters instead of the MOPAR ones? I have searched and come across a thread or two where people say use MOPAR, but don't back that up with anything. I mean NAPA is a pretty reputable parts dealer, I wouldn't imagine they would sell products that will cause any problems. Any insight appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
FishGuy

I hate buying MOPAR branded crap with a passion.

I bought MOPAR Trans filters ( eBay ) because of the horror stories i read online from using aftermarket ones.

Its the only maintenance part that you should buy OEM.

I'll have to do a bit more research and see some of the horror stories.

I got quoted around 250 for a new pan, filters, fluid, and labor at a good shop (not a dealer). I wonder what filters they would have used

Dorman pan $24.79
Wix Filter kit with spin-on, sump filter and gasket $27.79

Rockauto, delivers to the door quick and cheap. Have been using for years with no issues and never gotten the wrong part.

Have done a couple 545rfe trannys with this filter kit and never had any issues.

Thanks Danno, That's the exact set-up I was looking to purchase. Glad to hear no issues with using the filters

oem filters are not expensive. its worth it for peace of mind. if you plan on keeping this truck a while i would invest in a pan with a drain plug, or buy a drain plug kit for an OEM style pan. if you decide to use aftermarket filters and the kit comes with a gasket (most do), throw it away and use rtv like your supposed to.

DO NOT get the Dorman pan. It isn't formed correctly around the spin on filter and it pushes laterally on the filter. A new oem pan is around $70 and a much better option.

Like R.L.K. said, Mag Hytec is a fantastic pan if youre willing to spend the money. I just put one on last weekend and could not be happier with it.

As mentioned, go with oem filters over aftermarket.

LOL , I think the screen shot of the Mag-Hytec pan is yours Hemi395

I should mention the Mag-Hytec pan has a larger capacity of 1 1/2 to 2 qts and cooling ribs , good for cooler fluid if towing .

When it comes to Wix products, trace the lineage. Wix is owned by Dana, Dana is owned by Chrysler, Chrysler is the OEM. Wix is OEM last I checked. I've been wrong before though, so take it for what it is.

Thanks all,
I ordered some Mopar filters from ebay (comes with their RTV)...Just ordered the doorman pan, but after reading it pushes on the filter will cancel that order and search for oem...even though it rotted out in 70,000 miles.
Can't thank you all enough!

Also I topped off my fluid with valvoline transfer case fluid(855459). I popped in quick they pretty much had this or store brand ATF so I got this. It says it meets ATF+4 so I thik its fine...please let me know if I'm wrong

dana sold wix years ago (unless they recently acquired them again, but i dont think so). im pretty sure dana is not or ever was owned by chrysler either. is it possible wix supplies OEM trans filters to chrysler/mopar, sure but i doubt it. champion labs is an OEM supplier for mopar filters, whether that includes the trans filters i dont know but i would be inclined to lean that way.

If the OEM pan rotted out in 70000 miles I would bet the Dorman one would as well if not sooner...

I'm freaking out.
Should probably start a new thread but I'll try here first. So, I've been riding my bike to work until i got the time to put the new pan on and change the filters.
But it gets cold at night so I drove the truck twice. Now I feel like the truck is shifting weird. Got to work and fluid looks to be at an acceptable level (between the 'hot' holes).
By shifting weird I mean it seems slow...more throttle input before it changes gears. Not bad around town speeds but noticeable on the highway.
Is this what "slipping" is? Is my tranny toast? I guess I'll go ahead and replace the pan before I totally panic.
Sorry, in case you can't tell I'm freaking out!

I use the Dorman 4x4 pan and have no problems. You talking about the 2wd pan?

And I also use the Wix kit. Works fine.

Yes the 4x4 pan, maybe I got a defective one? I took a pic of the filter after I removed the Dorman pan and it had clearly dented the spin on filter in. Thing is one of the reviews on Amazon mentioned it contacting the filter.

Another thing is maybe the Wix filters are slightly different in shape and the Dorman pan doesn't interfere. Hootbro is also using the Dorman pan with no issues so who knows...

To be fair, BlownGP probably has a 545RFE which is what Dorman says will fit for their pan. While I have had not issue with mine to date, there still may be a reason why they do not catalog it for the later 66RFE transmission like me and you have.

Still though, Dorman has always been a hit or miss affair in terms of quality with their parts regardless.
